Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund toppled 11th seed Kevin Anderson in an enthralling five-set victory in the first round of the Australian Open, coming out 6-7(4) 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 on top.
Anderson, who reached the final of the 2017 US Open against Rafael Nadal, looked unassailable in the first set as Edmund barely made a dent on his big serve to lose in the tie break.
In a topsy-turvy encounter, Edmund and Anderson exchanged sets to take it into a fifth, where Edmund broke for 4-3 as his South African opponent’s game fell apart.
Edmund, the world number 49, saw out the set to keep the flame alive for British men at Melbourne Park: his shock win over Anderson means he remains the only one in the main draw after Andy Murray’s withdrawal with injury.
The 23-year-old Briton had treatment on his right shoulder in the fifth set but showed no signs of any injury in the closing stages, sealing his victory with another thunderous forehand winner to set up a second round clash with Uzbek Denis Istomin.
