Third time lucky

Despite having twice before held the much-coveted world no.1 ranking in October 2010 and February 2011, Saturday’s victory marked her first Grand Slam title victory.
The Dane lost out to Kim Clijsters at the US Open in 2009, and again at Flushing Meadows in 2014 to good friend, Serena Williams.

Epic battles

Snaring the title in a three-set thriller, lasting almost three hours, the match was indicative of the calibre of the women’s tournament this year, which saw shocks at every turn.
Fifth seed Venus Williams was knocked out in the third round by Belinda Bencic, who was in turn despatched by relative unknown Luksika Kumkhum in the second round.
Also in the second round, third seed Garbine Muguruza lost out to Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei, while Great Britain’s Johanna Konta was dumped out of the tournament in the second round by Bernarda Pera.

'Wonderful advert for women’s tennis'

Bright young things recorded their best ever Grand Slam results, with Naomi Osaka, for example, reaching the fourth round for the first time. Meanwhile epic matches played out on court with Halep eventually beating Angelique Kerber 6-3, 4-6, 9-7 in the semi-final.
While the women’s game is sometimes criticised for its inconsistency, there has been no shortage of entertainment at Melbourne Park.
