Roger Federer continued his progress at the Australian Open in Melbourne, while Angelique Kerber came through a classic and Madison Keys was in devastating form.
Federer eases into quarter-finals
Roger Federer never looked in trouble as he beat Hungarian outsider Marton Fucsovics 6-4 7-6 6-2. Well though the world number 80 played, the defending champion Federer was always in control and faces Tomas Berdych in the quarters.
Kerber survives Hsieh drama
Angelique Kerber had to dig deep to see off her Taiwanese opponent 4-6 7-5 6-2. Su-Wei Hsieh’s array of drop shots had Kerber on the run, but eventually the German’s superior fitness told.
Berdych handles wayward Fognini
Tomas Berdych continued his serene progress, reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 win over the wayward Fabio Fognini. The Czech has yet to drop a set but expect that run to end against Federer in the last eight.
Keys smashes Garcia
Madison Keys looked in ominous form as she destroyed France’s Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-2. The American is coming back from a long layoff due to a wrist injury, but was utterly dominant as she dismissed Garcia in 68 minutes.
Inglot through in doubles
Britain’s Dominic Inglot and partner Marcus Daniell reached the men’s doubles quarter-finals with a win over Hans Podlipnik-Castillo and Andrei Vasilevski.
Murray out of mixed doubles
Jamie Murray and his Taiwanese partner Letisha Chan went out of the mixed doubles, suffering a 7-6 6-4 defeat to Australian pair Storm Sanders and Marc Palomas.
