Halep wins marathon classic

World number one Simona Halep survived a titanic tussle with America’s Lauren Davis to reach the Australian Open fourth round – fighting back from a set down and saving three match points in a classic that stretched towards the four-hour mark. The Romanian eventually served out the match at the fourth attempt to complete a 4-6 6-4 15-13 win.

Pliskova edges through

Karolina Pliskova battled into the fourth round with a 7-6(6) 7-5 win over Lucie Safarova. In a match of just three break points between two Czech seeds, it was the former world number one who held her nerve on Court 3.

Keys remains perfect

Madison Keys reached the fourth round without dropping a set after defeating Ana Bogdan 6-3 6-4. The American has attracted few headlines in Melbourne, but is displaying similar form to that which carried her to the US Open final in September.

Thiem impresses

Dominic Thiem matched his best performance in Melbourne with a straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino to reach the fourth round. The Austrian showed few ill-effects from his five-setter against Denis Kudla in the second round, securing a 6-4 6-2 7-5 win on Margaret Court Arena.

Garcia survives wobble

Eight seed Caroline Garcia rode out a mid-match wobble to down Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 5-7 6-2.

Fucsovics comes of age

Former Wimbledon Junior champion Marton Fucsovics progressed with a 6-3 6-3 6-2 victory over Nicolas Kicker. Incredibly, the Hungarian had not won a Grand Slam match before this year's Australian Open – finally coming of age at 25.

Murray falls

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares were knocked out of the men's doubles in the second round by Indian duo Leander Paes and Purav Raja. The British-Brazil double-act won the tournament in 2016, but slumped to a 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 7-6 (8-6) defeat.
