We round up the overnight action at the Australian Open, with the men's and women's draws tackling the second round.
Djokovic victorious as Monfils wilts
With temperatures edging towards 40-degrees Celsius at Melbourne Park, Novak Djokovic overcame Gael Monfils 4-6 6-3 6-1 6-3, as the Serbian kept his cool to continue his comeback charge from an elbow injury. Monfils had taken the first set, but the Frenchman soon faded, calling for the trainer due to heat exhaustion as Djokovic went on to take the next three sets without reply.
World No 123 dumps out Konta
Britain’s Johanna Konta crashed out to world number 123 Bernarda Pera, with the American winning 6-4 7-5. In the blazing Melbourne heat, lucky loser Pera showed her cool against the ninth seed, breaking the Briton four times to set up a third-round clash against 20th seed Barbora Strycova, in what is her maiden Grand Slam.
Sharapova to meet Kerber
Maria Sharapova gained revenge over Anastasija Sevastova with a resounding 6-1 7-6 (7-4) victory over the 14th seed. Sevastova beat Sharapova in last year’s US Open fourth round, in what was the latter’s comeback Grand Slam following a 15-month doping ban.
The 30-year-old will now face 21st seed Angelique Kerber in the third round, after the 2016 champion overcame Donna Vekic 6-4 6-1.
Thiem battles back
Fifth seed Dominic Thiem battled from two sets down to beat American Denis Kudla. Thiem prevailed 6-7 (6-8) 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-3 to reach the third round after almost four hours on court in the sweltering heat at Melbourne Park.
Muguruza crashes out
Third seed Garbine Muguruza was dumped out of the Australian Open as world number 88 Su-Wei Hsieh prevailed 7-6 6-4 to reach the third round. Su-Wei’s reward for producing the biggest shock of the tournament so far is a match against 26th seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
Querrey falls
Sam Querrey became the latest American to fall in the Australian Open singles as Hungarian Marton Fucsovics beat the 13th seed 6-4 7-6(6) 4-6 6-2.
