TUESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1-Novak Djokovic (Serbia) v Mitchell Krueger (U.S.)
  • Tatjana Maria (Germany) v 16-Serena Williams (U.S.)
  • Nick Kyrgios (Australia) v 16-Milos Raonic (Canada)

MATCH OF THE DAY

  • Nick Kyrgios (Australia) v 16-Milos Raonic (Canada)
This could be an epic, or could be over quite quickly. It depends on which Kyrgios turns up. In front of his home crowd in Australia, you would hope he would be up for the battle. Kyrgios has twice reached the last eight while Raonic is a former semi-finalist. So much for Raonic getting a nice draw as a seed in the opening round.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE DAY

  • 1-Simona Halep (Romania) v Kaia Kanepi (Estonia)
At 33, Kanepi is well past her peak but holds a psychological advantage over Halep after beating her at the US Open last year. An aggressive player with a powerful forehand and backhand, she might rely on her physical advantage too, considering she is 1.81 metres tall and stronger than Halep in rallies. Halep can cover the court quickly despite her 1.68-metre frame and she has the ability to surprise opponents with winners even when she is on the back foot. But the Romanian has her work cut out against Kanepi.

BRIT WATCH

  • Johanna Konta (Great Britain) v Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia)
Konta has dropped to 38 in the world from her world number four ranking in July 2017. Tomljanovic is ranked 45th in the world, and has yet to go beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam event. But she will hope to revisit former glories in Melbourne having reached the semi-finals three years ago.
