"To be back in the semi-final means everything to me," says Nadal. "To be able to play in this court is always so special."

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 6-2 TIAFOE: A very straightforward win for Rafael Nadal against a player of the next generation - Roger Federer may have been slain, but the Spaniard hasn't been. A 30th Grand Slam semi-final for him, and his sixth in Melbourne - all wrapped up in just over an hour and a half.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 5-2 TIAFOE: Nadal has managed to create himself so much space this evening. Tiafoe doesn't have a handle on the great champion's gameplan, and although he hasn't quite panicked, he's certainly looked extremely uncomfortable.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 4-2 TIAFOE: Nadal starts his service game with an error but then pelts down the next four points. He trots over to change his racket - no wonder after that.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 3-2 TIAFOE: Good from Tiafoe, using the angles to send Nadal the wrong way. He keeps it to the single break as he sits down and mops his brow once more.

-

The crowd are so behind Tiafoe, though, it's really nice to hear. So often the Big Four get the audience's favour, making it tough for their opponent.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 3-1 TIAFOE: Tiafoe doesn't even bother moving for the last point as Nadal hits it straight down the tee.

-
-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 2-1 TIAFOE: Three aces in a row, and Tiafoe holds to love. All he needs to do is break. A few times.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 2-0 TIAFOE: Nadal drops a couple of points but recovers himself enough to hold.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 1-0 TIAFOE: Tiafoe is trying so hard but cannot run down these Nadal returns, although he's always got speed of serve to ramp up.

-

NADAL 6-3 6-4 TIAFOE: Brilliant winner down the line from Nadal to take him to set point. Tiafoe says he's going to challenge, and then decides not to, because it's a total waste of time. He laughs, the umpire laughs, everybody laughs.

-

NADAL 6-3 5-4 TIAFOE: Two aces for Tiafoe, who saves three set points here with that tremendous pace - nevertheless, the game still lasts over five minutes. Nadal will have the chance to serve it out.

-

The umpire is on the phone - unclear as to why, perhaps to call a trainer at the end of the set.

-

NADAL 6-3 5-3 TIAFOE: Nadal looks so focused, and is clearly sweating with exertion. Another hold as Tiafoe makes him work.

-

NADAL 6-3 4-3 TIAFOE: Tiafoe is so quick with his serve, going through that motion at a real lick and then sending that ball down at a pelt.

-
-

NADAL 6-3 4-2 TIAFOE: So much spin on the Nadal winners, and Tiafoe is struggling to keep up with some of these points.

-

NADAL 6-3 3-2 TIAFOE: Tiafoe is looking happier on his serve, though, going through each point very quickly though not under any time pressure.

-

NADAL 6-3 3-1 TIAFOE: Two break points lost by Tiafoe here, as they get to deuce and back four times. No real inroad on the Nadal serve, but...better than nothing.

-
-

NADAL 6-3 2-1 TIAFOE: Nadal just hit a backhand slice winner while facing the crowd. With his back to the net. Seriously. Tiafoe still manages to hold.

-

NADAL 6-3 2-0 TIAFOE: Nadal hasn't lost a single point on his first serve yet this evening. Eleven points in a row now for him.

-
-

NADAL 6-3 1-0 TIAFOE: A break to love for Nadal, who's playing so aggressively that Tiafoe doesn't know how to respond. The American is maybe trying a bit too hard.

-

NADAL 6-3 TIAFOE: What a wonderful rally to finish the set - Nadal is driving hard to Tiafoe's left repeatedly, and in the end just hammers it past him when he's wrongfooted.

-

NADAL 5-3 TIAFOE: Credit to Tiafoe, mind, trying the drop shot to test Nadal's reactions, and holding serve again to make the Spaniard finish things off himself.

-

NADAL 5-2 TIAFOE: A hold to 15 for Nadal. Tiafoe is trying to go after the second serve without much success yet.

-

NADAL 4-2 TIAFOE: Another love game for Tiafoe, who's got power of his own against the Nadal resistance.

-

NADAL 4-1 TIAFOE: Eurosport expert Frew McMillan suggests that Nadal's game plan is to keep the young man firmly in his place, and he's definitely doing that at the moment. His striking is just impeccable.

-

NADAL 3-1 TIAFOE: A love service hold for the young American to get on the board.

-

NADAL 3-0 TIAFOE: I'm sure he has the greatest of respect for his opponent, but Nadal just looks irritated to be even out there at the moment. He wants this over with.

-

NADAL 2-0 TIAFOE: Tiafoe starts with an ace, but after that he's out-thought and out-manoeuvred by a Nadal who's clearly ready to go and ready to assert himself.

-

NADAL 1-0 TIAFOE: Rafa has not come to mess about. Love service hold, with two aces in there, in the space of a minute. OK then.
