Jim Courier then brings Kvitova to tears by asking about whether she expected to ever return to a Grand Slam semi-final after her hand injury, incurred when she was stabbed by an intruder in her house.
Kvitova could still be the new world number one next week. So could Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina or Naomi Osaka.
"I'm sorry, guys, I beat Ashleigh - she's such a nice person, and you should be very proud of her," Kvitova tells the crowd. "It was a great match. I started better than in the final in Sydney."
KVITOVA 6-1 6-4 BARTY: 30-all, and a good rally leaves Kvitova moving towards the net and Barty stranded in the corner. The Aussie then returns the Kvitova serve into the net on match point. The Czech squeals, and the crowd applaud pleasantly as the two embrace at the net.
KVITOVA 6-1 5-4 BARTY: Wow. Actual silence as Kvitova breaks the Barty serve. The Australian is moving forward at pace and Kvitova forces a mistake. New balls, and one more game for the Czech to make the semi-final.
KVITOVA 6-1 4-4 BARTY: Kvitova gets a time violation on serve, and then wins a brilliant point on the diagonal. "Pojd!" she screams.
KVITOVA 6-1 3-4 BARTY: Great T-serve from Barty on game point, which Kvitova challenges just to be on the safe side, but Hawk-Eye just shows the Aussie's accuracy.
KVITOVA 6-1 3-3 BARTY: A love hold of serve for Kvitova too! When these two played in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, Barty crushed the first set before Kvitova won the next two in very tight fashion.
KVITOVA 6-1 2-3 BARTY: A love hold for Barty, as Kvitova rushes her returns and struggles to stay in touch.
KVITOVA 6-1 2-2 BARTY: Barty has her third break point on the Kvitova serve but still can't convert. Level pegging in the second.
KVITOVA 6-1 1-2 BARTY: Much stronger serving from Barty as she holds again. Kvitova is still hitting hard and often.
KVITOVA 6-1 1-1 BARTY: Barty pushes Kvitova more in this game, getting herself another break point, but the Czech also brings two aces in a row to the action.
KVITOVA 6-1 0-1 BARTY: Barty serves first in the second set and this hold - finished with an ace - triggers wild celebrations.
Twelve winners from Kvitova in that set compared to Barty's two.
KVITOVA 6-1 BARTY: Ridiculously destructive tennis from Kvitova. Sensational striking to wrap up the first set in 27 minutes.
KVITOVA 5-1 BARTY: That took just about a minute - a break to love. Kvitova is about to get the chance to serve out this first set after 24 minutes.
KVITOVA 4-1 BARTY: Kvitova's forehand is a thing of beauty. She extends her lead and the atmosphere on Rod Laver Arena is very strange. They want to admire this dominance from the Czech, but mostly they want their girl to win.
KVITOVA 3-1 BARTY: Whoops from the stands as Barty stands solid on serve despite the quality of the returns coming from the other end of the court. The Aussie is on the board.
KVITOVA 3-0 BARTY: Kvitova takes the first two points but Barty follows with the next three, getting herself to break point. She can't capitalise, though, and although Kvitova has a couple of problems with the height of her shot she eventually closes it out.
KVITOVA 2-0 BARTY: Early break as Barty is playing catch-up from the off, dampening the crowd's volume. Kvitova is hitting incredibly well. The Australian pushes her to deuce and manages to save game point but the break is inevitable.
KVITOVA 1-0 BARTY: Kvitova chooses to serve, and does so in solid fashion; Barty picks up her first point with a fortunate net cord.
The players are heading out on to court.
Kvitova leads their head-to-head 3-0 - most recently in the final of the Sydney International a couple of weeks ago.
Barty knows she can challenge the best.
While we wait for the match to start, you can practise the slice serve.
Lots to think about for Kvitova today - but not her ranking.
