Home favourite Alex De Minaur put the fervent crowd through the wringer - but eventually gathered himself to beat qualifier Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3.
It took him the best part of four hours to get the win - and an imminent third-round match with world number two Rafael Nadal.
De Minaur had a match point in the third set which he failed to convert, allowing the Swiss to take the tie-break.
"That was definitely pretty special," said the teenager afterwards, and added to the crowd: "You guys got me through that - I can't thank you guys enough."
