Tennis news - Simona Halep sets up fourth round against Serena after dismissing Venus Williams
Updated 19/01/2019 at 10:16 GMT
Simona Halep saw off two-times Australian Open finalist Venus WIlliams in straight sets on Saturday.
The World No.1 had not looked her best in her first and second round matches, looking particularly vulnerable in her last match, against Sofia Kenin.
However, Halep - whose 2018 season was cut short thanks to a back injury - looked to be on better form on Saturday as she broke in the fifth game and again in the seventh to win the first set 6-2.
It was a stuttering start for both Halep and WIlilams in the second set, with both losing their first service games, however it was Halep who broke again to go 4-3 up, then again in Williams' next service game to take the set 6-3 and the match.
Halep will now play Willams' sister Serena, after she beat Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska earlier on Saturday.
