Great Britain secured a place in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals with a straight-sets singles win for Cameron Norrie in Colombia.
Norrie’s 6-4 6-4 win over Nicola Meija in Bogota gave the Brits a 3-1 lead over Colombia to seal their progress.
The qualifying match promised to be a tricky test for the British team, taking place 2,566 metres above sea level and with pressureless balls being used.
Meija initially put Colombia ahead with a three-set win over Daniel Evans in the singles, but Norrie’s straight sets victory against Nicolas Barrientos levelled things up.
Evans then teamed up with Neal Skupski for the doubles, and they defeated former world No.1 pair Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4 6-4.
That left world No.11 Norrie needing to beat Meija to seal Britain’s qualification for the 16-team group stage, which takes place in September.
Norrie’s victory gave Great Britain an unassailable lead, meaning that Evans’ clash with Barrientos didn’t need to go ahead.
Leon Smith’s side can now look forward to competing in the competition proper, where they will hope to do better than last year, when the Brits suffered a group stage exit.
