Andy Murray won a fiery fourth rubber to secure victory for Great Britain in the Davis Cup Euro-African Zone Group One relegation play-off over Ukraine in Odessa.
Murray beat Ukrainian number one Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3 6-2 7-5 to earn his side an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie with just the one now-dead rubber remaining.
Murray and Stakhovsky exchanged glares and harsh words throughout and the Scot was on the receiving end of an official warning in the third set for challenging a line-call.
Having worked hard to gain a crucial break in the 11th game of the third set, Murray had to save two break points in the next game before serving out the match.
"I played on bad game on my serve but apart from that I did not give him too many chances," Murray said.
"I did not play my best but it was enough to win. Winning any Davis Cup match means a lot because it is a great honour to represent your country and it's the first time I have had to play all three games."
Stakhovsky – the world number 188 – had proved a tougher opponent earlier in the weekend when he pushed Greg Rusedski to five sets on Friday and comfortably won the doubles along with Orest Tereshchuk on Saturday.
The 19-year-old looked to be struggling after the match as he clutched an ice-pack to his chest but insisted he still plans to play in the Bangkok Open next week.
"Every time I breathed I was feeling a shooting pain in my chest," Murray added.
"It happened early in the third set but hopefully I will be ok for next week."
