Going into the match, the 13th and12th seeds had only met six times, with Goffin having won four of those matches - one of which was in the third round of the Australian Open, earlier this year.
Today, however, the pair were level after the second set at 4-6 7-6 (7) with Goffin taking the first despite struggling with his serve in the early stages.
Light rain saw play suspended on the Philippe-Chatrier Court towards the end of the second set, which went to a tie-break, won by Thiem.
Goffin rallied at the start of the third set breaking his opponent early, but a spectacular late burst by the Austrian saw him take the third 6-4.
Demonstrating how quickly the game can change, that was enough to give Thiem the confidence to administer a thumping in the fourth and final set. Gofifn was at least able to avoid the humiliation of a bagel, winning the sixth game of the set, but it was all too little too late asThiem romped home to claim a solid third set.
Thiem will play Novak Djokovic in his maiden Grand Slam semi-final, in the hope of preventing the world no.1 claiming his first ever French Open.
