Novak Djokovic produced an error-strewn first set in falling behind Roberto Bautista Agut in the last-16 match at Roland Garros.
The tournament favourite and world number one Djokovic lost the first 6-3 after being forced to play 36 minutes on a Philippe Chatrier court that resembled a mud bath with his opponent adapting better to the conditions in wretched conditions with light rain making the match a lottery as the yellow balls turned the colour of the clay court.
Djokovic is bidding to claim the career Grand Slam by lifting the French Open for the first time in his career, but he will have to come from behind to achieve the victory against an opponent who did not have to be at his best to claim the first set courtesy of two breaks of serve.
Djokovic looked very unhappy with his lot as he scampered off court as play was suspended after Monday's play at the year's second Grand Slam was wiped out, the first time an entire day was lost to rain at the tournament since 2000.
