Andy Murray raced into a one-set lead against Mathias Bourgue at Roland Garros on Wednesday before the French wildcard won six straight games in the second set to level at 1-1.
Murray, who overcame Radek Stepanek in five sets in the first round, secured two breaks as he took the first set with the minimum of fuss, taking it 6-2.
He was 2-0 ahead in the second set but a combination of inspired hitting by French underdog Bourgue and his own poor play allowed the world number 164 to level at 1-1 with the world number two being broken three times.
