Grigor Dimitrov upset by Fernando Verdasco in French Open third round

Round Up: Grigor Dimitrov's French Open campaign came to an end on Friday after he was dumped out of the competition by Fernando Verdasco in the third round.

Verdasco despatched fourth seed Dimitrov in straight sets to cause a massive upset on day six of the tournament.

It was a close first set, with both players looking a little nervy and each dropping their first service games. The pair were evenly matched until Verdasco edged ahead in the ensuing tie-break.

In the second set, Verdasco broke in the sixth game and won four consecutive games, dropping just four points to claim the second.

Dimitrov fought back in a more competitive third set, but could not overcome his opponent with Verdasco ultimately winning 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-4.

Verdasco will play either compatriot Novak Djokovic after the Serbian ground his way to victory over Verdasco's compatriot, Roberto Bautista-Agut, in four sets 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-4) 6-2

Elsewhere Alexander Zverev fought a five-set thriller against Bosnian Damir Dzumhur on the Philippe Chatrier court, winning 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 5-7 in a match that lasted three hours and 54 minutes.

19th seed Kei Nishikori triumphed in straight sets against Frenchman Gilles Simon by 6-3 6-1 6-3 in almost half the time of two hours and one minute.

Seventh seed Dominic Thiem muscled his way into the fourth round of the French Open, putting out Italian claycourt specialist Marco Berrettini 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 to set up a tie with Nishikori.

There was an upset on Court 18 when Marco Cecchinato came from a set down to claim a 3-1 victory over Spaniard and tenth seed Pablo Carreno.

The matches between David Goffin and Gael Monfils, and Lucas Pouille and Karen Khachanov, were suspended due to poor weather.
