Fourth seed Garbine Muguruza lost the first set but struck back to win 3-6 6-3 6-3 against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
The fourth seed from Spain was staring down the barrel after losing the opening set to the Slovakian before recovering her gait to win the closing two despite being far from peak form in a match lasting two-and-a-half hours.
Muguruza has reached the last eight for the past two years. She will meet world number 203 Myrtille Georges for a last-32 spot.
Muguruza was forced to saved nine break points in the opening game of the second set against a figure who has won only one match this year.
Muguruza hit 44 winners, but made 53 unforced errors and will need to find a better level of consistency to challenge for the title.
