The British number one was rarely troubled by the world number 137 as he extended his winning run on clay to 11 matches in 2015.
After shading a bruising opening service game, the world number three settled and established a 3-0 lead in the first set – only for his game to become littered with unforced errors, which allowed his opponent to restore parity at 3-3.
Murray bounced back to clinch the opener 6-3 in 40 minutes, then penetrated Arguello’s serve in the fifth and ninth games to seal the second set by the same margin.
And the British number one raced through the third set in 25 minutes for the loss of a solitary game to book a second round meeting with either Vasek Pospisil or Joao Sousa.
"The first round of the Majors are always tough and it was quite windy and difficult at the start," Andy Murray said on court afterwards.
"I was a little bit nervous at the start but I like that, it shows that you care and want to do well."
"I can hopefully play better as the tournament goes on."
Murray could face either Novak Djokovic or nine-time champion Rafa Nadal in the semi-finals.
Compatriot Heather Watson also progressed with a hard-fought 6-4 7-5 win against home favourite Mathilde Johansson.
