Roger Federer and Angelique Kerber traded singles wins in a dramatic Hopman Cup final between Switzerland and Germany.

Federer, who has put in commanding performances for his country in Perth, was sublime again as he brushed aside the 21-year-old World Tour Finals champion with a 6-4 6-2 win.

The 20-times Grand Slam winner took the opening set with a single break of serve to ensure that the German was immediately under the cosh.

Zverev did not play at all badly and produced a number of sensational winners, but was simply unable to haul himself back into the contest.

Federer assumed control of the match with an early break in the second set and, despite the German throwing everything he could at his opponent, held on with impressive ease.

The Swiss closed out the encounter with his second match point to take the second set 6-2 and give Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the tournament showpiece.

Belinda Bencic looked to close out overall victory for Switzerland, but Angelique Kerber levelled up the final with a 6-4 7-6(6) win.

Kerber looked supremely confident throughout as she secured the crucial break in the opening set, and she refused to let her level drop at all.

Bencic attempted everything in a tense second set, but Kerber again had just too much as she won the tie-break to close out victory.

The 30-year-old, who won the Australian Open in 2016, ensured that the mixed doubles rubber would be decisive.
