Kudla had a handful of moments, and Federer lost his concentration at a couple of points - but those things aside, it was one-way traffic. The match over in 57 minutes, and Federer is through to face the winner of Milos Raonic's match against Carlos Berlocq in round three.

FEDERER 6-4 6-1 - MATCH! At 30-30 Kudla is again in a spot of bother, but plays perhaps his best shot of the match, an angled backhand into the corner to leave Federer scrambling in vain. Federer responds with a tasty backhand of his own, and Kudla misses long to yield a match point. He fires long again, and the contest is over in double-quick time!
FEDERER 6-4 5-1 - Sensational drop shot from Federer midway through the rally - Kudla was nowhere near it. Having eased into a 40-0 advantage, he then whips a forehand across the court from an awkward position out wide. Exhibition stuff, and he needs just one more game.
FEDERER 6-4 4-1 - Kudla puts the first three points on the board to take control of the game, before a double fault and an approach which sails long gives Federer a chink of hope. But the American serves the next shot into the body, and Federer can only fend the backhand long past the baseline, and Kudla's on the board in set two.
FEDERER 6-4 4-0 - Just as he looks beaten, Kudla fashions a chance and earns a break point - but Federer denies him it and brings up game point of his own with a nonchalant forehand on the run. Federer now just two games away.
FEDERER 6-4 3-0 - BREAK! Timid stuff, really. Four points, all the way of the Swiss veteran. Kudla can be forgiven - better, more experienced players have wilted against Federer in the past, but his time on court is running out.
FEDERER 6-4 2-0 - Comfortable hold for Federer, who is nearing the finish line here and a place in the next round.
FEDERER 6-4 1-0 - BREAK! Kudla's problems intensify after Federer gets the early advantage in the second set. He's mixing up his returns well and asking plenty of questions of the teenager, and on the break point he forces Kudla to go for a little extra on a backhand pass and it heads wide.
FEDERER 6-4 - SET! Class tells - and Federer, who's hit five aces in this set, powers through to seal it in 32 minutes. Both men hit 11 unforced errors in the opener, but Federer's 12 winners to Kudla's 4 tells the story.
FEDERER 5-4 - The world number three's strokeplay can still dazzle, but he's also capable of making plenty of errors. Kudla with old-fashioned consistency and keeping the ball in play holds to love. Federer will have to serve out for the set.
FEDERER 5-3 - Normal service resumes: Federer comes through to hold his serve and that will return the pressure to the American, who must now hold his own serve to stay in the first set.
FEDERER 4-3 - Kudla certainly showing spirit - he doesn't appear to have any particularly strong weapons in his armoury, but has the resolve to recover from the Federer onslaught earlier in the set. He holds to 30 and the Swiss has just lost his way a touch here.
FEDERER 4-2 - BREAK! Applause for Kulda as the run without picking up a point ends when Federer misses the line, and against the run of play, some careless strokeplay from Federer yields a break point. Kudla strikes down the baseline with purpose, and Federer nets a backhand to hand half of his advantage back!
FEDERER 4-1 - BREAK! Blistering backhand from the Swiss to start, and everything is going his way now. Kudla tries to hit the ball even harder than he has been, and the errors follow as he searches for winners. Federer breaks to love again, and he's now won 14 straight points.
FEDERER 3-1 - Federer holds in the blink of an eye, closing out the game to love with an infuriating drop shot which lands out of reach of his American opponent.
FEDERER 2-1 - BREAK! Error from Kudla on a forehand gifts Federer the first point, and he pounces on that to win the next two points in clinical fashion. Three break points come up, and this time Kudla's nerve does not hold. An inopportune double fault to give up the first break of the match.
FEDERER 1-1 - Federer has a knack of whistling through service games against the best of opponents, and saunters through the first two points - but Kudla hits back, profiting from a Federer error from midcourt before steering a backhand winner past him. Forehand error from Federer takes the game to deuce, but the world number three holds. Bright start from Kudla, who's been unbowed so far.
FEDERER 0-1 - A good start from Kudla, grabbing the first point, but that doesn't make it any easier against the Swiss master. Federer guides a backhand pass down the line to earn the first break point at 30-40, but Kula shows character to deny him and come through to hold.

On paper this looks like a mismatch. Federer is the form man on the tour with wins in Dubai and Rotterdam - oh, and one or two Grand Slams in the course of his career. As for Kudla, he's a 19-year-old ranked 185 in the world. The biggest match of his career, and it will be fascinating to see how he copes.
