Johanna Konta progressed to the quarter-finals of the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham with a 6-4 7-6 (7/5) victory over fellow Briton Heather Watson.
The fourth seed next faces Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic, and will be joined in the final eight by compatriot Katie Boulter, a wild card who impressively overcame former US Open champion Sam Stosur 7-6 (8/6) 6-1.
There were also victories at the grass-court competition for top seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia, who defeated China’s Yingying Duan 6-3 6-2, and Croatian fourth seed Donna Vekic, who overcame Vera Lapko of Belarus 6-2 7-6 (8/6).
At the Libema Open in Holland, rain halted play between Germany’s Antonia Lottner and Elise Mertens of Belgium when they were drawing 2-2 in the first set of their last-16 match.
Eighth seed Aryna Sabalenka, from Belarus, was drawing 3-6 7-6 (7/5) with Australian Ajla Tomljanovic when they too were forced to abandon play. Each will resume on Friday.
The weather also caused the postponement of Dutch third seed Kiki Bertens’ match with Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, but America’s Alison Riske had enough time to defeat Fanny Stollar of Hungary 7-6 6-2.
