Third time lucky for Ons as she finally gets her reward on the return. This time the variety cracks the American’s resistance and a low slice lures an error long on the first of two break points.

That’s a good response from Jabeur. She again eases through a tidy hold, but that one lapse earlier means she’s going to need to up the ante here if she’s to avoid seeing this first set run away from her.

A shake of the fist and a content look towards her corner is the understated reaction of Pegula as she holds to 30 to consolidate.

How often do you see that? A player on the back foot for quite some time springs forward and makes the breakthrough. Pegula charges to the net and puts away a fine volley on the stretch to claim two break points. She only needs one as another foray proves fruitful once again.

Jabeur looks exasperated. She carves out another break point but once again the dogged determination of her opponent thwarts her. It’s taken some doing but Pegula clocks up another tough hold from deuce.

It’s far more routine for Ons as she eases through a confident hold to get on the board.

That’s some fine work from Pegula. There’s no time for nerves from either player as they engage in some unorthodox and eye-catching rallies. The American shows real resilience to save three break points before eventually coming through a stern early test.

This is their fifth meeting with the match-up tied at 2-2. However, Jabeur has won the last two encounters, including a showdown in Dubai earlier this year.

The main important thing for me -- I know it's winning the title -- but it's knowing that I gave it all during the match and not regretting that. I know if this one is not coming, then there is another one. I keep pushing myself to do better, and the proof is that from Charleston I worked really hard to be in the finals here.
