The British No 1 went down 6-1 6-2 to the German after some uncharacteristic unforced errors.
The Australian Open champion will now face the USA’s Madison Keys, a 6-3 6-1 winner over Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, in the last four.
Konta’s hopes of a medal now rest with the mixed doubles where she joins Jamie Murray in a match against America’s Jack Sock and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the first round.
