Novak Djokovic books his spot in the semi finals of the 2021 French Open where he will meet 13-time champion Rafael Nadal for the 58th time in their careers. The Serb upped the ante just as it looked like another tie break was looming and broke on his third match point. The world number one gets the job done after three hours and 28 minutes. The match was stopped midway through the fourth for fans to depart and despite a close battle in the last two sets the top seed prevailed. He screams in delight at the end, roaring and shouting in Serbian. That’s what it means.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-5 BERRETTINI. It’ll be the minimum of a tie break for Novak. Berrettini offers a very brief riposte with a return winner down the line, but the Serb takes his tally to 10 aces with two more in this game to crank up the heat once again.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 5-5 BERRETTINI. That forehand really is a bullet when it’s firing on all cylinders. It does just that here as Matteo drops just the one point to a rasping deep return. Tie break anyone?

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 5-4 BERRETTINI. If you blinked you may have missed that. Djokovic saunters through a rapid love hold lashing down his eight ace of the night to finish. The pressure will mount on Matteo now. He must hold to stay in the French Open.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 4-4 BERRETTINI. It looks routine and Djoker seems to lack full interest as Matteo moves 40-0 up. A double fault changes that and alarm bells start ringing for the Italian when the Serb presses to deuce. It’s clutch work from there though and he pulls levels once more.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 4-3 BERRETTINI. The fall has had no ill effects on Nole’s game. He canters to a love hold despite seeming to have a bloody hand. What focus and desire to remain fully in the zone from the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 3-3 BERRETTINI. Drama! Djokovic threatens from 40-15 down with tremendous elasticity on the return. The Italian digs deep to turn it back his way before Djokovic takes a heavy tumble when wrong-footed by the No.9 seed’s winner. He’s a tad shaken but should be okay once he’s dusted the red clay off his kit.

The stadium has been cleared. The short warm-up is done and the battle is about to get back underway.

PLAY HALTED. The players are just leaving the court while the crowd depart due to the curfew. It's a real shame in terms of the spectacle. Djoker and Matteo will be back shortly to continue in an empty stadium.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 1-1 BERRETTINI. The crowd are going to have to depart very shortly due to the curfew. That’s not good for Matteo who has been feeding off their positive energy. The Italian outsmarts Djoker with a lovely lob winner to make 30-15 before the big serve does the business.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 1-0 BERRETTINI. It suddenly looks a bit tricky for Djokovic when he double faults to trail 0-30. The Serb responds with a trio of points but Berrettini forces deuce with a crosscourt forehand winner. Djoker switches to clutch mode and the serve and finish is just too good.

SET! -DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 6-7 BERRETTINI. Well, that was unexpected. Djokovic tightened up with the match seemingly all set for him to sew up. He’s been extraordinary until that moment. Expect the top seed to come back with a vengeance in Set 4.
