Roger Federer lost 7-6 2-6 6-3 to Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday.
It is the first time the underdog has beaten a top 10 player in his 16th attempt, and a huge blow to Federer's momentum with the ATP Tour Finals in London only one month away.
The 27-year-old played fearless tennis as he shocked defending Shanghai champion Federer in just over two hours.
Second seed Federer missed out on two break points in the Spaniard's opening service game and ended up losing the first set on the tie-break.
The second set was more like the Roger Federer many tennis fans would recognise, with two breaks in games five and seven enough to force a decider.
However, a crucial break from Ramos-Vinolas in game eight of set three allowed him to serve successfully for the match.
It was Federer's first event in three weeks, since participating in Switzerland's Davis Cup World Group play-off win over the Netherlands.
He misses out on what could have been his sixth title of the season this week, but will take part in the ATP World Tour Finals in November.
Either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Victor Estrella Burgos is up next for Ramos-Vinolas in the last-16.
Elsewhere, Gilles Simon beat qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in one hour and 33 minutes in a first-round tie.
The Frenchman reached the final in Shanghai last year, where he succumbed to Federer, and goes on to face Leonardo Mayer for a place in the third round.
