There's no hiding place for Rafael Nadal, and Fognini is forcing us to confront the impossible thought of Nadal losing from 2-0 in sets.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-6 3-4 Fognini. A few games back, Fognini was grimacing with some kind of foot issue, but he doesn't seem to care. Yet again, the Italian steps up to the baseline and brings some brilliant tennis. The backhand is still red hot, and he holds quickly.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-6 2-0 Fognini. As Nadal tightens up and refuses to give anything away, Fognini becomes even more elastic with his shotmaking and the consequential errors. He finishes the game with a terrible drop shot, and Nadal consolidates the break.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-6 1-0 Fognini. Break! Nadal may have been caught cold by Fognini's sudden arrival in New York, but he was never going to stay that way for long. The Spaniard makes his first response to Fognini's level by grinding the Italian down in a 9 minute game. Two double faults on game points will cause massive woe for the Italian, and he begins set 4 a set down despite all his great work.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-6 Fognini. Set! Quite the turnaround from Fognini, who throws up some transcendent play, moving incredibly and redirecting some of Nadal's biggest blows. He's on fire, and the flame has really caught Nadal by surprise. As Nadal tries to react and push his own aggression down set point, the Spaniard mis-times a forehand. Into a fourth set.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-5 Fognini. Fognini actually seems to be gaining confidence here. He fires down some nuclear serves and marries them with some solid forehands. The Spaniard is still quite tentative with the forehand, but they're particularly hurting him on the Italian's service games.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 4-4 Fognini. Once again, Rafa humbly puts his head down and serves up a pretty quick hold. A series of solid first serves and he strolls to the hold with very few issues.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 3-4 Fognini. No problems for Fognini this time around. After breaking, the Italian wins his third game in a row with that classy, aggressive play. He's floating, but for how long?

Nadal 6-3 6-4 3-2 Fognini. As if anticipating the lack of atmosphere around the stadium, Fognini decides to pick an argument with the umpire about a late hawkeye challenge. He loses the argument, but follows it up with some silky forehand to keep Rafa close by in the third.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 3-1 Fognini. Some more solid serving from Nadal, including an ace and a service winner, and the champion consolidates the break and puts some daylight between himself and Fognini.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 2-1 Fognini. Break! The gifts continue from Fognini. From 30-15, the Italian sprays a series of errors, ending with a wild and errant forehand. With very little to do, Nadal is leading 2 sets and a break, and he's looking great.

Nadal 6-3 6-4 1-1 Fognini. Nadal continues to be solid, and so far there are few problems to speak of. The Spaniard captures a hold to level things up quickly.

Nadal 6-3 3-3 Fognini. Nadal levels things up with a solid service game. Nothing massive still, but the serve is firing and everything else comes easily afterwards.

Nadal 6-3 1-2 Fognini. Nadal comfortably levels things up with a brilliant forehand, only for Fognini to edge away once more. The Italian is serving well and slowly easing himself into this match. When he does so, Fognini sure is a handful.

Nadal 6-3 0-1 Fognini. No problems for Fognini in his opening service game of the new set. The Italian connected with a couple of slick down the line forehands, and he gets his reward.

Nadal 6-3 Fognini. Game and set, Nadal saunters through the final game of the opening set with aplomb. Some solid forehands, and the champion is one set to the good in New York.

Nadal 5-3 Fognini. After a bit of a deuce struggle, Fognini connects on some big first serves. The forehand follows soon aftr, a pair of joyful slaps with his weaker wing. The Italian eventually holds.

Nadal 5-2 Fognini. Rafael Nadal remains ahead of the game. The Spaniard keeps his serving tight, slamming down a couple of big forehands beind the delivery to stroll on through. So far, very little resistance across the net

Nadal 4-2 Fognini. This time, a strong and emphatic hold from Fognini. The Italian flies into a jump backhand, slotting the ball home with ease and earning his first break of the night.

Nadal 4-1 Fognini. Nadal retrieves his break with thanks to a slew of ungodly Fognini forehands, but this time he refuses to relinquish his fresh lead. With some accurate, solid first serves, the Spaniard puts clear daylight between himself and Fognini.

Nadal 3-0 Fognini. Break! The Nadal break doesn't last too long, as Fognini decides to start smasing forehand winners from every part of the court.

Nadal 2-0 Fognini. First return game, first break for Nadal. It appears Fognini hasn't been paying too much attention to Nadal this week, because he loaded everything straight to the Nadal backhand. Sadly for him, Nadal's backhand has been his most reliable weapon this week, and with it the Spaniard breaks.

Nadal 1-0 Fognini. No problems for Rafa in his first service game of the match. The Spaniard finds his first serve and strolls through to an early hold.

It's Rafa time in New York. The Spaniard is finally on court for his battle against Fabio Fognini, a player who he has a certain history with. The Italian triumphed in their first two meetings this year, then the pair argued on court more recently after Wimbledon in Hamburg. We'll see what today brings.
