Much like Cilic in the first set, Chardy responds with some brilliant first serves to dig out an incredibly important hold and consolidate the break.
Cilic 6-3 2-4 Chardy. Break! Cilic is still looking a little shaky after his earlier stumble, and as Cilic goes on the offensive, the Croat makes a couple of narrow forehand errors. As the dust settles, Chardy makes his first breakthrough of the day to move up on his Croatian opponent.
Cilic 6-3 2-3 Chardy. An awkward stumble from Cilic leaves him slightly limping, testing out his ankle and looking a little shaken. Distracted by all of this, he sends a couple of groundstrokes flying and Chardy holds once again.
Cilic 6-3 2-2 Chardy. Cilic is still feeling it out there, and he responds with his own series of first serve firecrackers. He too completes his game with a big serve, serving out the game to love and sending a message across the net in the process.

Cilic 5-2 Chardy. Some big hitting from Chardy takes him to a break point, but Cilic responds with a massive ace. However, a loose backhand error from the Croat gives the Frenchman another chance to break back immediately. But Cilic finally gets the first serve cranking, crushing through the final three points to consolidate the break with an important hold.
Cilic 4-2 Chardy. Just a loose service game from the Frenchmanso early on. The backhand proves his downfall, as a couple of errors fly off his weaker wing. One such netted backhand after a lengthy exchange gives the defending champion his first breakthrough.
Cilic 3-2 Chardy. Cilic's first serve percentage is pretty woeful right now, but no fear. The second serve continues to bully the Frenchman enough. After some big serving, a cool forehand down the line on the run forces an error from the Frenchman and gives Cilic his first love hold.
Cilic 2-2 Chardy. Another easy hold for Chardy, who is already cranking up his serve speeds impressively. He closes it out with two successive service winners, the latter a 129mph scorching ace.
Cilic 2-1 Chardy. Chardy gets the defending champion to a promising 15-30, but the Croat responds with a couple of brilliant second serves. The Croat captures three points in succession, dismounting with one such second serve winner to move ahead once more.
