The qualifier from Italy looked starstruck on Louis Armstrong Stadium against the two-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka, who came out on top, winning 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.
The 31-year-old Swiss has won three ATP titles this year but is looking to bounce back from an early exit at the Western & Southern Open, where he fell to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
