NADAL 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 6-2 LAJOVIC: That's that! A terrific service game from Rafa Nadal seals a straight-sets victory over Dusan Lajovic on Ashe.
The top seed recovered from a break and 5-3 down in the first set against the Serb, who played superbly in the opener but could not match Nadal's quality thereafter.
NADAL 7-6 6-2 5-2 LAJOVIC: A little reminder of just how well Lajovic played in the opening set as he fires one of those unique one-handed backhands onto the line and past Nadal on the way to a hold. He's a talented player but it takes more than that to keep up with Nadal.
NADAL 7-6 6-2 5-1 LAJOVIC: Next level stuff from Nadal, who finds the corner with the perfect forehand to take another step towards this victory. Lajovic serving to stay in the match now.
NADAL 7-6 6-2 3-1 LAJOVIC: Nadal faced three break points in that game but he saved the second courtesy of a pair of stunning sliced backhands and the third with a thunderous smash. He seals the game courtesy of a big serve and an unforced error from Lajovic. Closing in...
NADAL 7-6 6-2 1-0 LAJOVIC: The top seed begins the third set with another break and a confident hold, clinched with a monster serve. Lajovic may be thinking about keeping this respectable now.
NADAL 7-6 6-2 LAJOVIC: Nadal seals the second set with a thumping ace. A two-set lead for the world No.1 now and he could still step up a gear or two.
NADAL 7-6 5-2 LAJOVIC: Lajovic holds serve for the first time in the set but you feel he's delaying the inevitable. Nadal to serve for a 2-0 lead.
NADAL 7-6 5-1 LAJOVIC: Nadal on the brink of the second set after taking another game with a big forehand winner. He's looking fresh. Lajovic serving to stay in it.
NADAL 7-6 4-1 LAJOVIC: As you were. Just too good from Nadal who restores his two-break lead, helped with a beautiful sliced backhand.
NADAL 7-6 3-1 LAJOVIC: Sloppy game from Nadal gives Lajovic a break back. There's life in the Serb yet, who seems to have relaxed a little after suffering those consecutive breaks.
NADAL 7-6 2-1 LAJOVIC: Nadal is starting to assert his dominance and he meets a forehand at shoulder height and whips it down the line for a superb winner on his way to another break, sealed when Lajovic fires wildly long. Cruise control now for the Spaniard.
NADAL 7-6 1-0 LAJOVIC: More of the same in this set from Nadal, who continues where he left off with a powerful break in the opening game of the second set.
NADAL 7-6 (8-6) LAJOVIC: Both men, at times, just too good and some high-quality tennis takes it to 5-5. Lajovic attempts to come to the net but his approach is poor and he's punished, leaving Nadal serving for the set.
Remarkably, he double faults taking it to 6-6. He earns another set point with a massive, trademark forehand though and Lajovic fires long this time, to put Nadal 1-0. Superb tennis.
A little anxiety creeps into Lajovic's game and two unforced errors help Rafa to a rapid 3-0 lead in the tie break. The underdog responds by finishing a long rally with a stunning one-handed backhand winner into the corner for 3-1. Another couple of fine points leave Nadal 4-2 up at the changeover...
NADAL 6-6 LAJOVIC: Tie break!
NADAL 6-5 LAJOVIC: Nadal turning the screw now and he holds comfortably to leave Lajovic serving to stay in the set and under pressure again.
NADAL 5-5 LAJOVIC: A ferocious baseline exchange ends with Lajovic firing long to take it to 0-40 and the pressure gets to the Serb, who misses another forehand to give Rafa the break. We're back level in the first set and the top seed is in the ascendancy now.
NADAL 5-4 LAJOVIC: At 30-15, a sumptuous backhand passing shot from Lajovic finds the line. It's superb but Nadal responds with a big serve and he holds, after a couple of deuces, when the Serb nets. Rafa will have one more chance to rescue this set.
NADAL 3-5 LAJOVIC: The top seed is serving to stay in the first set after more steady hitting from Dusan Lajovic.
British No.3 Aljaz Bedene is among the spectators on a jam-packed Ashe.
NADAL 2-4 LAJOVIC: A Lajovic drop shot is punished by Nadal but the Serb responds with a thunderous forehand down the line.
The pair exchange points but it's Lajovic who continues to impress, claiming the game when he forces Nadal to net. Pulsating stuff on Ashe.
NADAL 1-2 LAJOVIC: That wasn't in the script. Dusan Lajovic earns the first break as Nadal sends a looping forehand long. The Serbian has settled a little better into the under-roof surroundings on Ashe.
NADAL 1-1 LAJOVIC: No sign of nerves, rust or that reported knee injury in the opening games for Rafa. Lajovic holds at the first time of asking.
Here we go...Rafa to serve first.
Next up on Ashe...Rafa Nadal!
The top seed is out wearing a fluorescent pink shirt (sometimes I miss Wimbledon's all-white rule...) ahead of his first-round match against Dusan Lajovic and he receives a roaring reception from the crowd under the roof.
Look who's in da house...
