US Open 2017: Fifth seed Marin Cilic falls to Diego Schwartzman to leave bottom half wide open

Fifth seed Marin Cilic crashed out of the US Open, losing 4-6 7-5 7-5 6-2 to Diego Schwartzman.

The Croatian, who won the title back in 2014, was the highest-ranked player left in the bottom half of the draw but will not be adding to his Major collection this year.
Seeded five for the tournament, Cilic is the latest high profile casualty to fall in New York, despite taking the opening set 6-4 he went down 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4, hitting well over 70 unforced errors during an error-strewn match.

Schwartzman is playing some of his best tennis in 2017 and has reached the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career.
The Croatian’s shock exit now means the bottom half of the draw features no Grand Slam finalists, with American big-hitter Josh Isner the highest seeded player at No.10.
Elsewhere Frenchman Lucas Pouille, the men's 16th seed set up a fourth-round clash with Schwartzman after beating Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov beat Kyle Edmund 3-6 6-3 6-3 1-0 after the Briton retired just after the start of the fourth set with a neck injury.

Shapovalov will meet 12th-seeded Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta who hit 32 winners to beat Frenchman Nicholas Mahut 6-3 6-4 6-3 and seal a fourth- round spot.
The 26-year-old has progresses past the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time, as he targets a first grand slam title.
American 17th seed Sam Querrey beat unseeded Radu Albot 4-6 6-2 6-4 6-4. Querrey struck 19 aces and 49 winners as he closed out the match in just over two hours.
