Nadal: "He's one of my best friends on the tour and we have shared some great moments together on the court. It's sad for me to see him finish like this. He's a great person and a fantastic player."

"This is the last Grand Slam of my career," Ferrer confirms in the post-match interview to the crowd. "Thank you very much. I will miss you a lot."
In the end, Ferrer's injury troubles got the better of him. His Achilles has become a real issue for him late in his career and no level of treatment from the trainer tonight could see him through the match. This could be his final US Open.
FERRER RETIRES! That's it from the veteran. What a shame. He was a break up in the second set, but Ferrer just didn't feel that he could continue. Nadal is through, 6-3, 3-4. He will face Vasek Pospisil.
*NADAL 3-4 FERRER (6-3): That's better from Nadal. He holds to love, serving out the game with an ace. Ferrer didn't even attempt to get a racquet on that. This is turning into a very strange match.
NADAL 2-4 FERRER* (6-3): On the court, it's not looking so good for Ferrer. On the scoreboard, though, it's looking very good in this second set. Ferrer saves a break point to consolidate the break of his own in the previous game.
*NADAL 2-3 FERRER (6-3): Err, so I'm not quite sure what just happened. Ferrer can hardly move behind the baseline, but he's just broken Nadal, who is very distracted by what is happening at the other end of the court.
NADAL 2-2 FERRER* (6-3): Ferrer finds a way to stay on serve in this second set, but it's not looking good for one. He is limping pretty badly now. There's a real chance he doesn't finish this match.
Del Potro through! The Argentiean is into round two after a straight sets 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 win over Young on Louis Armstrong court. Nice and quick victory for Del Potro, who will want to compete at this tournament.
Trainer out! Ferrer is getting some treatment at the change of ends. It seems to be that troublesome Achilles. This might be a bit of a problem for the veteran Spaniard.
*NADAL 2-1 FERRER (6-3): Nadal sees out his service game with an ace down the middle. After an early break for Ferrer at the start of the second set, he is now fading again.
NADAL 1-1 FERRER* (6-3): Immediate break back from Nadal! He drew Ferrer into the net and volleyed into the empty court to get us back on level terms in the second set.
*NADAL 0-1 FERRER (6-3): Out of nowhere, Nadal drops his serve right at the start of the second set. Ferrer finds some depth of shot, but Nadal drops it with a double fault.
FIRST SET TO RAFA! Nadal 6-3 Ferrer. A 43-minute set for Nadal. He brought up two set points on the Ferrer serve. The first one was saved, but then Ferrer sent a forehand long and Nadal takes the first set.
*NADAL 5-3 FERRER: That was a chance for Ferrer to take that game to deuce. He had the ball on his forehand side in the middle of the court, but his shot drifts into the tramlines.
NADAL 4-3 FERRER*: It's so humid out there on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The two players' shirts are clinging to them. Nadal has already asked for an air blower. "They had one in Cincy," he says.
NADAL 3-2 FERRER*: The 36-year-old holds his serve, but not before some cat and mouse play with Nadal. The highlight of the game was a point at the net with ended with Ferrer putting it away with an overhead.
*NADAL 3-1 FERRER: Nadal looked to be cruising there, but was on the wrong end of an unfortunate net cord and then threw in a double fault to take the game to deuce. He gets through it eventually, though.
NADAL 2-1 FERRER*: There's the first break of the match and it goes the way of Nadal after some typically dogged defence from the Spaniard. Ferrer just ran out of shots and allows his serve to slip by planting a backhand in the net.
*NADAL 1-1 FERRER: A comfortable service hold from the world number one. Nadal raced to 40-15, dropped in an unforced error, but was never really tested by Ferrer.
Good start! Del Potro is up against Young out on the new Louis Armstrong stadium and the Argentinean has taken the first set to love. It's 2-2 on serve in the second set right now.
NADAL 0-1 FERRER*: Nadal takes up a deep position to receive serve, asking Ferrer to hit through him. The 36-year-old obliges, with one lovely inside out winner in particular, but for how long will he be able to keep that up?
Upset avoided! Anderson found himself in a hole against Harrison, but the big South African has found a way through to the second round, coming from 2-1 down to take the match in the deciding set.
We're under way! Ferrer serves first, although not before play has been halted to let some tardy spectators into their seats.
Not so long ago, this could have been a Grand Slam quarter or even semi final. These two guys have a history together. However, Ferrer isn't quite the player he once was and is edging closer to the end of his career.
The two players are out on court. The usual routine - coin toss, some practice hitting. Won't be long until we get under way.
