Angelique Kerber beat Karolina Pliskova 6-3 4-6 6-4 in the US Open final to bring an end to one of the most astonishing Grand Slam seasons in tennis.
Kerber, 28, had never reached a slam final before 2016 but won the Australian Open, reached the final of Wimbledon and now marks her ascension to the world no.1 spot with victory in New York.
The German broke in the first game of the contest on Arthur Ashe Stadium and then broke the big Pliskova serve again to clinch the first set.
Though Pliskova looked ever stronger in the second set and broke midway through to take the score to 4-3, and ultimately took the second set despite Kerber's best efforts to thwart her, holding firm after the initial break.
Pliskova's final set got off to a strong start, breaking 2-1, but Kerber held firm after a spell of looking like she was tiring in the humidity. The German broke right back to keep the pressure on her opponent.
With just one game between Kerber and her second grand slam victory, she routed Pliskova in the final game, breaking her 40-0 to take the game, set and match and seal her newfound world no.1 status.
