Top seed Serena Williams may not have been happy with her performance but she still looked ominous at Flushing Meadows as she crushed Vania King 6-3 6-3.
The world No 1 required just 64 minutes to dispatch her compatriot on Arthur Ashe Stadium Thursday night to set up a clash against Sweden's Johanna Larsson.
Her victory also earned her a landmark 306th career win at a Grand Slam to pull her level with Martina Navratilova, who was 306-49 during her career at the majors.
Williams hit 38 winners, including 13 aces, as pop star Beyonce and husband Jay-Z looked on from Serena's player box.
King, a two-time major doubles champion, has made a late-career comeback after a hip injury set her out for the latter part of 2014 and part of 2015, but was unable to contain the 34-year-old.
"Every match I like to go out and do the best I can so hopefully I will be able to play better as the tournament goes on," said Williams, who was not entirely happy with her display.
Williams is aiming to land her seventh title at Flushing Meadows and seal what would be a record 23 Grand Slam titles.
