Heather Watson's wretched US Open record continues as she crashes out in the first round for the seventh consecutive year, losing 4-6 4-6 to Elize Cornet.

The British No.2 struggled to find any consistency against the French player and she was broken in the first game of both sets.

Erratic stuff from Heather Watson, who serves up four double faults in a row but then wins four straight points to hold and take the second set to 4-3. Alize Cornet is also struggling to find her rhythm and a bit of consistency would go a long way in this contest.

Hold on! Heather Watson looked down and out but she breaks back in the second set after a flurry of unforced errors from Alize Cornet, the last a sloppy backhand beyond the baseline. It's level at 2-2 in the second set and the momentum is firmly with Watson now.

Deja Vu for Heather Watson, who is broken in the opening game of the second set, just as she was in the opener. The British No.2 has described her six first-round exits at Flushing Meadows as "a coincidence, not a curse" and she has work to do to avoid a seventh. Now 2-0 to Alize Cornet.

A fist-clench and a roar from Alize Cornet, who takes the first set 6-4 at the fourth attempt as Heather Watson sends a reaching forehand long. Watson appeared to have the bit between her teeth after a gutsy hold for 5-4 but she has plenty of work to do to avoid a seventh first-round exit at Flushing Meadows.

Heather Watson is still alive and kicking in this match, saving three break points against Alize Cornet to take the first set to 5-4. Cornet is having plenty of joy on the Watson second serve but the Briton's big backhand has already got her out of a few tight spots.

A disgruntled Heather Watson is unhappy with a late line call following a thumping baseline forehand but there's no sympathy from the chair umpire and the point - and the hold - goes to Alize Cornet, who now leads 4-2. Watson now facing a crucial service game in this first set.

Not the best start for Heather Watson, who is already a break down to Alize Cornet on Court No.4. The Brit was broken in the opening game, firing a forehand into the tramlines, and it has gone with serve since, with Cornet now leading 3-1.
