US Open 2017: Kyle Edmund hammers Robin Haase to make winning start as qualifier Norrie joins him

Kyle Edmund produced an impressive display to complete a 6-3 7-5 6-3 win over 32nd seed Robin Haase in the US Open first round.

The British number two reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows a year ago before losing to Novak Djokovic, and showed he again means business with a dominant performance to overpower Dutchman Haase.

"Last year, I had no pressure on me when I played Richard Gasquet," said Edmund. "Today was a bit different. I expected to do well, and did well managing the game. Overall to come out and win n three straight sets, I was pleased with it.
"My coach told me that if I my mentality was right, I had the game to win."
Edmund, full of confidence after reaching the semi-finals at the Winston-Salem Open last week will now play American Steve Johnson for a place in the third round.

Edmund, who controlled the match from the back of the court, used his booming forehand to pummel Haase into submission and broke his opponent's serve on five occasions.
The Briton clinched the decisive first break of the match in the eighth game of the opening set to lead 5-3 before serving out to win it 6-3 in 37 minutes.
Edmund was first to break serve again in the second set to open up a 5-3 lead and - although Haase broke the Briton for the only time in the next game and then held to level it up at 5-5 - the Briton did not falter.

He broke Haase again immediately after and stayed on the front foot to seal the second set 7-5 after 50 minutes.
Haase's disappointment was compounded when he lost serve for a fourth time in the opening game of the third set and Edmund sealed victory by breaking again at 5-3 up after the Dutchman double-faulted on his first match point.

There was more good news for the British challenge in the men's draw with qualifier Cameron Norrie also progressing against Russia's Dmitry Tursunov, who was forced to retire injured trailing 7-6 6-1.
He is guaranteed $77,000 for reaching the second round, double what he has earned so far this year.
British number five Cameron Norrie marked his US Open debut with an easy win over Russian Dmitry Tursunov who retired at the start of the third set because of a knee injury with his opponent two sets ahead and cruising.
Johannesburg-born Norrie, from Fort William, won a tight opening set on Court 14 on the tie-break before racing to a 6-1 score in the second when his opponent pulled out.
The first set went with serve until the tie-break which Tursunov, once ranked as high as 20 in the world, led 2-1 after taking the first point against serve.

Norrie: I'm stoked to be in the second round

Norrie bounced back and led 8-7 when he was able to break Tursunov's serve and claim the tie-break 9-7.
However, the Briton, ranked at 225 and over 400 places higher than his opponent, then dropped his serve in the first game of the second set.
Norrie broke back and then held serve before breaking his opponent in the fourth game to lead 3-1.
After Norrie held to love to lead the set 4-1, Tursunov called for the trainer to get some strapping to his right knee.
Norrie broke Tursunov again before holding to love in game seven for a comfortable 6-1 victory in the second set.
Tursunov, who has never gone beyond the third round at the US Open, then retired to hand his opponent an easy victory and a place in the second round.
