The 37-year-old faces Maria Sakkari next in her bid for a third title at Flushing Meadows - and first since 2001.
After going a break up in the first set, Williams squandered a set-point opportunity on the Dodin serve before failing to see it out a game later.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion raced to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but world number 48 Dodin showed great resolve to break Williams back when she was serving for the match.
But as champions so often do, Williams responded in style, and she broke Dodin to love in the next game to seal the victory.
