Wimbledon 2018: Roger Federer breezes to victory in opening match

Roger Federer cruised to an extremely comfortable 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory over Dusan Lajovic to get his 2018 Wimbledon campaign off to a very happy start.

The 36-year-old was hardly tested as he won the opening set in just 20 minutes, showing no rust whatsoever despite having taken the entire clay-court season off.

The Swiss, who is looking to win his ninth title at SW19 this year, completed victory in just 79 minutes as Lajovic struggled to compete throughout.

As the first match on Centre Court in the tournament this year, the crowd were treated to a sublime display from the top seed.

"I felt very good from the start which is nice," Federer, who has now one 24 consecutive sets at the All England Club after blazing to the title last year without dropping one, said on court.

"Felt at home right away. Got the early break in each set and I was able to bring it home."

Federer will next take on the winner of Lukas Lacko and Benjamin Bonzi in the second round.

"They [my kids] know I play a lot of tennis, but they won't know what my ranking would be," Federer said.

"They wouldn't know what I'm actually maybe trying to do really. They know that there is a trophy involved at some point if I do play well, because they get most excited about the trophies.

"I think probably it would be a few more years for the boys to really remember. The girls, they will always remember at this point, of course."

The Swiss, playing in his 20th consecutive Wimbledon, is bidding to become only the second player to win nine singles titles at the All England Club after Martina Navratilova.
