WILLIAMS 6-3 5-2 – The pressure may be telling. A simplish forehand into the net for 15-30 Williams. Two match points...the American has the chance to play into a completely empty court, though to be fair the ball came at her with a lot of pace and she can’t hit over the net. Kirilenko hits a forehand winner, but slices poorly for another match point...a perfectly placed serve saves it. They trade blows and Kirilenko eventually grabs the consolation game.
WILLIAMS 6-3 5-1 – Serena with two consecutive aces and an unreturned serve give her a hold to love. One game from victory here...
WILLIAMS 6-3 4-1 – BREAK! Kirilenko in more trouble here. She is 0-30 down and a massively deep return from the American catches her off guard and gives Serena three break points...she thinks she gets the break, but the ball is called just long. It doesn’t matter a bit as she thwacks a huge return down the line for a winner.
WILLIAMS 6-3 3-1 – Serena belts a backhand into the corner. Kirilenko drops to her knees to get to a low ball, but to no avail. An ace and that game is over before it even started.
WILLIAMS 6-3 2-1 – BREAK! Williams smashes to come back to deuce and the game swings back and forth until a lazy forehand from the Russian hits lamely into the net for the break.
WILLIAMS 6-3 1-1 – Kirilenko works back from 0-30 down to draw level. A forehand goes long that the Russian takes to Haweye. It’s well long and Serena can break here...Serena does well to get to a drop shot with plenty of time, but the forehand is terrible and it’s deuce. A fearsome backhand up the line brings another chance...not taken and she hits into the net to hand the initiative to her opponent.
WILLIAMS 6-3 1-1 – Serena’s serve gets her out of a bit of trouble and she levels the second set.
WILLIAMS 6-3 0-1 – Ominous signs for Kirilenko at the start of this set as Serena smashes a winner then draws the error with a ball that barely leaves the ground. Two break points...a deep serve out wide saves one, and the American wastes the other with a poor forehand crosscourt. Kirilenko goes on to grab a very important hold.
WILLIAMS 6-3 – Kirilenko holds serve to make Williams serve out for the set. Williams clips the line for a winner and Kirilenko nets a backhand. Two break points and at the second attempt Serena aces into the far corner. Kirilenko challenges it, but Hawkeye only confirms the call.
WILLIAMS 5-2 – Kirilenko keeps an interest in this set by holding to 15. Serena carries on raining down the big serves though and she moves ever closer to the first set.
WILLIAMS 4-1 – Williams gets herself in a bit of trouble, but promptly gets herself out of it by chucking in a couple of aces. Kirilenko works a break point, then misses a crosscourt winner by literally a millimetre as she goes to Hawkeye. Williams takes full advantage to streak further ahead.
WILLIAMS 3-1 – Serena has two break points, but wastes both shots into the net. Make that three in a row into the net...make that four in a row! Terrible game from the American.
WILLIAMS 3-0 – The American’s hit seven winners already as signs are ominous for the rest of the women’s game that she is coming back, and fast. That was a game to love.
WILLIAMS 2-0 – BREAK! Serena’s beating down some huge forehands and smashes a bouncing ball by the net to put her 15-30 up. A backhand winner down the line gives her two break points...she wastes one with a shanked backhand, but she gets it at the second attempt as Kirilenko hits long.
WILLIAMS 1-0 – Serena’s opening service game goes to deuce, but a slice into the net from Kirilenko hands it to the American.
