KERBER 6-3 6-5 BENCIC. Kerber remains mentally tough and crunches through a love hold. Bencic must now hold to stay in the match.
BREAK! - KERBER 6-3 5-5 BENCIC. Belinda is in deep conversation with herself. She's fuming over a line call. She felt Kerber's shot to the baseline was out, but it was actually in. She only has herself to blame as she blew two set points at 40-15 and then two more from deuce. Kerber dug in to keep pressing the nerves of the Swiss and eventually got herself level on her second opportunity.
BREAK! - KERBER 6-3 4-5 BENCIC. Hello! Bencic charges in to pick up a tame drop shot and crunches a sizzling crosscourt backhand to earn the break. She will now serve for the set.
KERBER 6-3 4-4 BENCIC. Belinda still has high hopes of taking this the distance. Kerber cracks a forehand winner but then coughs up an unforced error off the same flank to allow the Swiss to level to 30.
KERBER 6-3 4-3 BENCIC. Kerber corks a backhand winner that clips a slither of the line to get her nose back in front with a game to 30.
KERBER 6-3 3-3 BENCIC. Kerber has an opportunity to reassert her authority at 15-30 ,but winners off both flanks put Bencic in charge. Angie then miscues a forehand and it's all square in Set 2.
BREAK! - KERBER 6-3 3-2 BENCIC. A couple of backhand winners suddenly turn the tide out of the blue as Bencic earns two break points. Kerber has dealt with these situations well for the most part, but not on this occasion. A double fault lets Belinda back in.
BREAK! - KERBER 6-3 3-1 BENCIC. Angie springs from defence into attack! Bencic is getting increasingly frustrated and it's costing her dear. She's broken to love and has a mini rant which will be music to Kerber's ears.
KERBER 6-3 2-1 BENCIC. Kerber is put under some pressure, but she's striking the ball so well and digs out a fine hold from deuce.
KERBER 6-3 1-1 BENCIC. Belinda stops the rot. Kerber comes close to the break with a controlled crosscourt volley from deuce, but Bencic saves it before dragging herself back onto the board and - she will hope - into the match.
KERBER 6-3 1-0 BENCIC. Angie maintains the momentum with a sixth game in a row as she opens Set 2 with a hold to 15 courtesy of a forehand winner.
SET! - KERBER 6-3 BENCIC. It all goes wrong for Bencic as Kerber stays steady and benefits from some needless errors. The German has three chances at triple set point and gets it done on the second to take the first set in 42 minutes.
KERBER 5-3 BENCIC. Angie eventually backs it up, but came under fire in a lengthy service game. Bencic had her opportunities and two break points, but Kerber dug deep to move within a game of taking the opening set.
BREAK! - KERBER 4-3 BENCIC. The 2016 finalist ups the ante at 40-15 down and it pays off. A crushing forehand winner gets her to deuce before she grinds away at Bencic. A break point comes along and the Swiss can't keep her cool, wildly flashing wide and long down Kerber's right flank.
KERBER 3-3 BENCIC. Angie moves level with a hold to 15.
BREAK! - KERBER 2-3 BENCIC. That's a splendid response from the German. Kerber notches up triple break point with a forehand winner and claims the game to love when Bencic coughs up an unforced error off the same flank.
BREAK! - KERBER 1-3 BENCIC. Kerber sees a 40-15 lead evaporate. Bencic presses at deuce and draws first blood with a sweeping crosscourt attempt that catches Angie by surprise.
KERBER 1-2 BENCIC. Belinda digs out the hold to 30 to keep her nose in front in the early stages.
KERBER 1-1 BENCIC. This one looks like it could be a real battle if these first two games are anything to go by. Plenty of engaging rallies and close points. Bencic presses Kerber to deuce, but the German pulls clear and ties the score.
KERBER 0-1 BENCIC. That's a big hold, even at this early stage. Kerber comes out all guns blazing and racks up two break points. Bencic saves one and then comes out on top in a super rally to make deuce with an overhead. The Swiss Miss then finishes the job with the next two points to get on the board.
