Vekic 6-1 6-3 Stephens - Stephens comes back from 0-30 to 30-all, but then nets an inside-out backhand and Vekic has match-point! But how well does Stephens defend it! A huge cross-court forehand from the backhand corner, then another, higher one, show she's not giving this one up. But she's quickly threatened again ... and this time a net-cord helps her! Stephens then saves a further match-point, can't convert some game points, then arranges another with another net cord. But Vekic doesn't give a rabbit one, pasting a backhand winner before accepting a double fault that gives her her fourth match-point. AND THIS TIME STEPHENS NETS A FOREHAND! THE NUMBER 4 SEED, US OPEN CHAMPION FRENCH OPEN RUNNER-UP IS OUT! WHAT A PERFORMANCE! Vekic, who now has an enticing looking path through the draw, faces Peterson or Kuzmova next.
Vekic 6-1 4-3 Stephens - No, the tide has not turned! Stephens does not look herself; Stephens looks like someone hoping to stumble through and see. Vekic breaks again, and now only needs two holds for round 2!
Vekic 6-1 3-3 Stephens - Has the tide turned? Stephens breaks back and tellingly, the decisive point comes by way of double fault.
Vekic 6-1 3-2 Stephens - I wonder if Stephens took things for granted slightly. She took a break after making the final at Roland Garros and only arrived in London late last week; perhaps she thought she could get her rest, then ease herself into the competition, not without reason. But Vekic isn't letting her, breaking after six deuces, and now needs only three holds for her first win over a top-5 player.
Vekic 6-1 1-2 Stephens
Well that escalated quickly. Stephens has righted herself now, but will know that one lapse on serve and she's in enormous trouble.
Vekic 5-1 Stephens
Interesting activity on Court 1, where the French runner-up, reigning US champ and number four seed is struggling. Vekic is a tough first round draw, but you'd expect someone who moves as well as Stephens does to sort herself out on grass.
