Britain’s Kyle Edmund suffered a straight-sets defeat to Gael Monfils in the second round of Wimbledon.
Edmund started the match well, forcing his enigmatic French opponent to a tie-break in the first set.
But Monfils took it and then eased to a 6-4 second set win.
The big-hitting Edmund threw everything at Monfils at the start of the third set, racing into a 3-0 lead with a break of serve, producing a standard of tennis that thrilled a partizan crowd.
However, Monfils hit back, with the 15th-seed won five games on the bounce before serving out for a 7-6 6-4 6-4 win.
