The British number two made a nervous start before showing his class to overwhelm the qualifier in two hours and three minutes.

"This hasn't been a great tournament for me over the years so it is nice to get the win," said world number 50 Edmund.

"As a kid, this is the tournament you dream about and want to do well at as your home event."

He could meet 15th seed Gael Monfils in the last 64 in the Frenchman beats Daniel Brands later on Tuesday.

German 27th seed Mischa Zverev has progressed to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 6-4 win over Australian Bernard Tomic.

Zverev dominated the encounter, hitting 18 aces as he sealed the victory without facing a single break point.

Former US Open champion and 29th seed Juan Martin del Potro needed four sets and a seventh match point before overcoming Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia.

Del Potro will next face Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

Milos Raonic breezed past Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets, while Adam Pavlasek responded to losing the first set against Ernesto Escobedo with a crusshing performance to beat the American in four - losing just five matches across the final three stanzas.
