Wimbledon 2017: World number one Angelique Kerber battles past Irina Falconi

World number one Angelique Kerber was a 6-4 6-4 winner over American qualifier Irina Falconi after a tough first-round battle on Centre Court.

"The first round here is always tough," said Germany's Kerber, who will next face Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium who was a 6-4 6-3 winner over Japan's Misaki Doi.
"She had nothing to lose. She came from through the qualifiers. It was a good match from both of us and it is always good to have a difficult match in the first round."

Kerber lost in the first round of the French Open and was forced to battle hard to beat the world number 103 a year after losing to Serena Williams in the final.
