The British number one has been engaged in a running battle with France’s Caroline Garcia, who had powered into the eighth and final qualifying slot with a stunning run of 11 wins in a row.
Konta, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals this year, knew she had to reach the final in Moscow to take Garcia’s place from her.

But the world No. 10 has been forced to pull out with an injury to her left foot, missing out on the showpiece finals for the second year in succession. She said in a statement:
I'm very sad and disappointed to have to withdraw from the VTB Kremlin Cup because of my continuing foot injury. I want to send everyone in Moscow my best wishes for a successful tournament. I was really looking forward to what I know will be a great week there and I’m really sorry that I can’t be part of it. I hope to see you all in 2018.
In 2016, Konta's fate was also sealed at the Kremlin Cup as a win for Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final against Daria Gavrilova ensured the Russian took the final qualifying place.
Konta has, however, qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy which takes place in China at the end of October and features the players ranked ninth to 19th. She may also be on standby for the WTA Finals is someone is injured.
Still, the news means the line-up has now been confirmed by the WTA:
The WTA Finals take place in Singapore between October 22 and 29.
