Third seed Alexander Zverev crashed out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells at he hands of German Jan-Lennard Struff in 70 minutes.
Struff, ranked 55 in the world, broke Zverev for a 4-2 lead in the first set and converted on his third set point.
The second was an easier affair as the world number three – suffering from a virus – lost a third service game to love to give Struff the 6-3 6-1 win.
He will go on to face Milos Raonic in the next round, after the Canadian came back from a break down in the third set to beat qualifier Marcos Giron 4-6 6-4 6-4.
Number 30 seed Laslo Djere fell in straight sets to Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2 7-6 (3). while world number 74 Yoshihito Nishioka beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-7 (2) 6-4 7-6 (5).
Gael Monfils made light work of Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a 6-0 6-3 win and could face Novak Djokovic in the next round.
The Serbian was 1-0 up in the first set against Philipp Kohlschreiber when the match was interrupted by rain.
