An Incident-Packed Day Eight at Lake Placid

It was an incident-packed day of action at the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games, with technical issues on the Speed Skating Oval and chaotic scenes in cross-country skiing.

France took gold in the mixed team relay after South Korea, the United States and China were all penalised for failing to complete their laps, with the French the only team to do so.
There was also gold on the ice for Choi Min-jeong, the South Korean winning the women's 500m, having clinched gold in Thursday's 1500m.
In the men's 500m final, Japan's Shogo Miyata took gold to stop South Korea from adding another skating title to their remarkable tally at this year's games.
In the mass start, David La Rue flew home over the final two laps to take men's gold for Canada while it was a Japanese 1-2 in the women's as Misaki Shinno took gold with compatriot Yuka Takahashu landing the silver.
At Mount Van Hoevenberg, errors cost the Czech Republic and Japan gold medals, with the Czechs taking the wrong course in the men's 4 x 7.5-kilometres relay and the Japanese women crashing out of gold medal contention in the 3.5km relay.
There was European dominance in the team ski-jumping, with Austria's Maximilian Lienher and Timon Pascal Kahofer winning gold in the men's and the Polish pair Nicola Konderla and Kinga Rajda winning the women's.
Gore Mountain saw the final of the men's and women's snowboard big air, and it was yet another gold for Japan as Yusei Kaku finished with a score of 172.00 to take the top spot.
And Switzerland's Livia Tanno won her second gold of the games with success in the women's big air, despite crashing on her third run.
There was also success for Italy in the women's slalom as Carlotta Marcora took gold, and the men's and women's free ski big air saw gold for Germany's Jakob Gebner in the men's and Yuna Koga for Japan in the women's - her countries 21st gold of the games.
Saturday sees the final full day of action at Lake Placid, with gold medals on the line across various disciplines, including the men's slalom.
There is also action in the biathlon, short-track speed skating and snowboarding, plus the men's and women's curling finals and women's ice hockey final.
