Sunday June 11

16:00 THANK YOU AND GOODBYE

And that's it from us for the Le Mans 24 Hours. Thank you for joining us for this incredible race!
Don't forget that there more top-class sport on today - the men's French Open final is live on Eurosport.

15:32 PODIUM CEREMONY UNDERWAY

The drivers are now being invited to the podium to receive their flower wreaths and, in the case of Ferrari, the trophy.

15:12 CELEBRATIONS BEGIN PROPER

Alessandro Pier Guini brings the Ferrari back to the start finish straight to collect his teammates and accept the crowd's salutations.

15:03 CORVETTE RACING CLAIM LMGTE AM WIN

The win in the LMGTE AM class goes to Corvette Racing (#33) as Nicky Catsburg takes the chequered flag.

15:02 INTER EUROPOL COMPETITION TAKES LMP2 WIN

Fabio Scherer crosses the line to take victory in the LMP2 class for Inter Europol Competition (#34).

15:01 #51 FERRARI ARE THE 2023 LE MANS WINNERS

And it's official now: Alessandro Pier Guini takes the chequered flag and secures the win for Ferrari upon their return to the race.

14:58 FINAL LAP

One more lap and we're done here. Only the cruellest of fates could now take the win away from the #51 Ferrari crew.

14:45 ORDER AFTER FINAL STOPS

Ferrari's advantage over the Toyota still stands on well over one and a half minutes over the #8 Toyota who are heading home with Ryo Hirakawa behind the wheel. The Cadillacs follow in third and fourth, the #2 Cadillac steered by Earl Bamber ahead of Sebastien Bourdais' #3. Antonio Fuoco and the #50 Ferrari complete the top 5.

14:39 LATE SCARE FOR FERRARI

Heartbeats are sure to have momentarily stopped in the Ferrari box as the car once more wouldn't fire up following Alessandro Pier Guini's final pit stop. This time though the issue wouldn't cost them quite as much and the #51 returns to the track still holding a healthy lead.

14:29 #5 PORSCHE IN TROUBLE

The nightmare is complete for Porsche as the #5 car of Michael Christensen is slowing on track. There is no evident damage, so the cause is likely a technical issue.

14:03 HIRAKAWA REMAINS IN THE TOYOTA

The #8 Toyota now also makes its way to the box. Ryo Hirakawa stays behind the wheel for the time being.

13:53 GIOVINAZZI COMPLETES HIS FINAL STINT

That's it for Antonio Giovinazzi who heads to the pits and hands the steering wheel over to Alessandro Pier Guini for the final hour. Still holding a two-minute advantage, without the Toyota having pitted yet, they are under no threat whatsoever.

WEEKEND OF CHAMPIONS

It's all happening in France today! The men's French Open final is now live on Eurosport. It's Novak Djokovic versus Casper Ruud for the title - everything is set for a cracking match!

13:24 FERRARI ODDS-ON FOR WIN

There is still just over one and a half hours to go, but, baring any disasters, this is Ferrari's for the taking. With a 3 minute and 22 second lead now, a lot has to happen for them to get caught - anything can happen in Le Mans though!

13:16 #8 TOYOTA SPINS (OUT OF CONTENTION)

And that's Toyota's chances, realistically, gone. Ryo Hirakawa experiences a lock-up on the rear, spins into the gravel, and touches the barrier. There is some visible damage to the car - Hirakawa returns it to the box, but this will cost time.
Risk versus reward went against Toyota there and this might be the race decided.

13:10 FERRARI PITS

Once more Ferrari call a pit stop shortly after Toyota. Antonio Giovinazzi stays in the car and rejoins the track with a 15-seconds lead.

13:05 SERVICE FOR TOYOTA

Brendon Hartley concludes his stint, having extracted the maximum from the Toyota, and hands over the Ryo Hirakawa.
The swap to Hirakawa is an interesting one; from the outside, the intuitive action might have been to keep Hartley out and capitalise on having a driver that is already in the zone and has a rhythm going (assuming he is in a physical condition to keep driving). On the other hand, when a driver is verging on the side of exhaustion, that's when mistakes can happen.

12:57 SISTER SUPPORT FOR FERRARI AGAIN?

The gap is down to 9 seconds, but Brendon Hartley is now running right behind the #50 sister Ferrari. However, Miguel Molina swiftly heads to the pits and the #9 Toyota is all good to go again.

12:45 GAP CLOSES SLIGHTLY, BUT FERRARI STAY IN CONTROL

Brendon Hartley has reduced the gap to Antonio Giovinazzi to 11 seconds, but that seems to be it for the time being. Ferrari look well in control right now and able to manage their advantage.

12:26 FULL SERVICE FOR THE FERRARI

James Calado now too heads to the pits and hands the car over to Antonio Giovinazzi. That should be it for Calado who put in an exceptional shift for Ferrari throughout the hours.
Around 15 seconds now separate the Ferrari and the Toyota.

12:23 TOYOTA ONCE MORE FIRST TO PIT

The #8 Toyota is in the box and Brendon Hartley gets some brand new medium tyres - 'Go get them!,' the box instructs him.
It appears that they are giving Hartley fresh tyres for only one stint. Rather unusual and indicating a maximum attack approach.

12:10 REFLECTING ON TOYOTA'S STRATEGY

Toyota is giving clutching at straws at the moment; they are significantly inferior to the Ferrari pace-wise and, in consequence, in zugzwang to try everything. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to be happening for them. Running a third stint on their tyres should have earned them a time advantage in the box, but instead, Ferrari made four seconds good on them. Brendon Hartley is driving his heart out to cut the gap to James Calado but can't close in and, making matters worse, the very used tyres are causing him some trouble.
The latest call to keep Hartley out for a fourth stint only demonstrates that they're up against it and searching for any possible advantage they can create over the Ferrari. What they're hoping to achieve is likely to a) keep Hartley's rhythm going and not interrupt the flow, and b) keep Sebastien Buemi fresh and sharp for the closing stages.

11:58 GAP INCREASES AGAIN

James Calado is gradually winning time on Brendon Hartley but can't run away with it (yet); the gap is now sitting on 14 seconds.
The Toyota box meanwhile pleads Hartley to control the brake pressure - mind his tyres are now on their third stint - as the Kiwi goes slightly off track at Mulsanne. Interestingly, they also inquire whether Hartley feels able to race a fourth stint (he does!). This istrategy is likely aimed towards keeping Sebastien Buemi fresh and sharp for the closing stages.

11:44 NEXT SET OF PIT STOPS COMPLETE

Toyota are once more first to call to the box for a standard service. Crucially, they opt to keep Brendon Hartley on the same set of tyres. Ferrari come in a lap later, also choosing to keep going on the same tyres. Back out on track, the gap is now sitting on 10 seconds.
Curiously, the gap was around six seconds before, meaning that Ferrari won time on Toyota in the box. The advantage is now firmly with them.

11:35 NO PENALTY FOR HARTLEY

The consensus is that Brendon Hartley deliberately cut the chicane to pass the LMP2 car, but with the advantage gained not being significant enough, race direction have decided to only award a warning.

11:27 HARTLEY UNDER INVESTIGATION

The jury is now officially out on Brendon Hartley's cut chicane as race direction are taking a closer look at it. The decisive factor will be whether they deem Hartley to have gained an advantage by going off track.
The Kiwi is looking back on great form again though, setting purple sectors.

11:25 PROBLEMS FOR THE TOYOTA?

Brendon Hartley reports under steering issues on his vehicle.
Shortly after, he runs off and cuts the chicane - the jury is out on whether this was an actual driving error or a convenient way to overcome the LMP2 running ahead of him.

11:20 FRUSTRATION FOR HARTLEY

Not only having to deal with the very feisty #50 Ferrari, Brendon Hartley is also forced to navigate some LMP2 traffic, costing him additional time. The gap to the #51 leading Ferrari is up to over five seconds again, but it's worth bearing in mind that James Calado is on fresher tyres.

11:16 TEAM WORK FROM FERRARI

James Calado his keeping Brendon Hartley behind him and is now getting help from his lapped #50 sister Ferrari. Miguel Molina closes in on the Toyota and does his manufacturer-colleagues a big favour by occupying Hartley, verging on the edge of what is too aggressive from a lapped car on a front runner.
The Toyota crew are meanwhile debating the possibility to run three stints on the same tyres. Saving a tyre change should give them a time advantage over the Ferrari in the box.

11:05 AITKEN IN THE GRAVEL

Alex Lynn is looking entirely luckless this weekend as he finds his Cadillac in the gravel again, this time at the Daytona chicane. It's game over for the team and the car needs to be recovered, causing a slow zone once more.

11:04 ALL IN FROM TOYOTA

The gap is down to just over a second and Brendon Hartley is looking racey. He gets the go ahead from his box to apply some extra power in this stint.

10:58 FERRARI PIT TOO, GAP TIGHTENS

Alessandro Pier Guidi also heads to the box and hands the #51 Ferrari over to James Calado. While they maintain the lead, Toyota once more win the pit stop battle and the gap is now down four seconds.

10:54 HARTLEY IN THE PITS

The #8 Toyota crew opt for an early pit stop while the slow zone is active, no doubt hoping to get the better of the Ferrari on strategy.
Same applies to the #23 Cadillac who are also doing a driver swap, introducing Renger Van Der Zande.

10:42 SLOW ZONE AGAIN, INSULT TO INJURY FOR PORSCHE

Porsche are having a nightmare at Le Mans. After various issues to their hypercars, their LMGTE AM Proton entry is now out of the race as well as Michael Fassbender loses the car in the Porsche curves and encounters the barrier. The actor is able to get the car back to the pits before it's officially retired, but a slow zone is called out on track.
picture

‘That’s a big hit’ – Fassbender loses car in Porsche curves, careers into barrier

10:35 NO CHANGES AT THE FRONT

Alessandro Pier Guidi and Brendon Hartley are just about matching each other's pace at the moment, keeping the gap at around 19 seconds.

10:24 TRACK LIMITS WARNING FOR PIER GUIDI

No panic for Ferrari at this point but something to keep an eye on as Alessandro Pier Guidi receives a track limits warning.
Meanwhile, Pier Guidi laps Earl Bamber in the #2 Cadillac, meaning there are now only two cars left on the lead lap.

10:21 NO ISSUES IN THE BOX THIS TIME

Relief among the Ferrari crew as their stop goes smoothly and Alessandro Pier Guidi heads back out, refuelled and in the lead. Toyota complete a driver swap, Brendon Hartley now behind the wheel, and are trailing the Ferrari by just over 18 seconds.

10:20 PIT STOPS IMMINENT

Both the Ferrari and the Toyota receive the 'box this lap' call.

10:18 REFLECTING ON FERRARI'S PACE

The fact that Alessandro Pier Guidi is almost nine seconds in the lead is quite astonishing; considering their spinner during the night and them having spent around four and a half minutes more at the box than the #8 Toyota, one wouldn't think they would be anywhere near the top. If it hadn't been for those issues, the Ferrari would be leading by well over a lap at this point.

10:07 ADVANTAGE FERRARI

Alessandro Pier Guidi currently runs 6.5 seconds ahead of Sebastien Buemi, proving the Ferrari's superior pace.
However, there are still question marks behind Ferrari's fire up issues - and whether the same could happen again at their next pit stop. At this point, Toyota's job is to stay in the game, play their part well, and potentially pounce when the opportunity arises - still almost five hours to go!

09:59 CADILLAC ARE THIRD

It's all Ferrari versus Toyota at the moment, but it's worth mentioning that Earl Bamber is third in #2 Cadillac. He's trailing by more than three minutes, but, crucially, he's the only other car on the lead lap.
Scott Dixon in the #3 Cadillac follows in fourth with Paul Di Resta and the #93 Peugeot in fifth. The gaps are significant here.

09:48 PIER GUIDI REGAINS THE LEAD

Edging ever closer to the Toyota, Alessandro Pier Guidi pounces going onto the Hunaudieres straight. He accelerates just about past Sebastien Buemi who tries to fight back, but the Ferrari comes out top as the duo brake into the chicane.
Sensible from Buemi here who likely soft-pedalled into the corner to avoid contact and, in consequence, damage to the car. Ferrari are looking superior on pure pace, it is now down to Toyota to outsmart them on strategy.

09:45 EXCITING BATTLE

Toyota are in the lead now, but the Ferrari has been the faster car in the latest stages. Alessandro Pier Guidi has closed the gap and a move doesn't look too far away!

09:38 FERRARI INCH CLOSER

Alessandro Pier Guidi is gradually closing the gap to Sebastien Buemi and almost within punching distance.
Meanwhile, the Ferrari crew have reported that the issue in pit lane was that the car simply wouldn't fire up and a power cycle was required. However, there now seem to be problems with the radio, the box apparently unable to hear their driver.

09:31 FERRARI STUCK IN PIT LANE, TOYOTA TAKE LEAD

The #51 Ferrari heads to the box for a driver change as Alessandro Pier Guidi takes the wheel. However, issues are keeping the car stationary. The #8 Toyota squad are there to capitalise: having mirrored their opponents and also come in, they now overtake in the pit lane. When the Ferrari finally gets going again, they are just under six seconds behind the Toyota.
picture

09:18 DA COSTA IN TROUBLE

Antonio Felix Da Costa (#38 Jota-Porsche) encounters the barriers in the Indianapolis curve. He nurses the visibly damaged car to the box, but a slow zone is called to clear debris off the track and fix the barrier.
Some teams are opting for a stop during the slow zone, others are speculating on a safety car.

09:10 LMP2 AND LMGTE AM STANDINGS UPDATE

While it's Ferrari versus Toyota in the hypercars class, here is an update on how things are shaping up in the other classes.
LMP2
  • 1 Inter Europol Competition (#34)
  • 2 Team WRT (#41)
  • 3 Duqueine Team (#30)
  • 4 Panis Racing (#65)

  • 1 Corvette Racing (#33)
  • 2 Iron Dames (#85)
  • 3 Project 1 - AO (#56)
  • 4 ORT by TF (#25)
  • 5 AF Corse (#54)

09:00 GAP STABILISES

The gap between Antonio Giovinazzi (#51 Ferrari) and Sebastien Buemi (#8 Peugeot) is fairly constant at around one minute now. As it stands, the win is going down between these two teams as Richard Westbrook in the #2 Cadillac in third is trailing by moe than three minutes. However, another safety car could change everything.

08:43 FERRARI PIT IN LEAD

The leading #51 Ferrari comes to the box for a standard service. They rejoin the track still in the lead, and also regain their advantage when Sebastian Buemi also navigates the #8 Peugeot to the pits. The gap now sits on around a minute.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE NIGHT

Action continued in the twilight hours. Here is a chronological recap of what happened:
Porsche's nightmare continued as they were forced to steer the #5 car back to the garage to fix a leaking radiator. The works cost them a damning 23 minutes.
The #8 Toyota squad opted for an early pit stop under full course yellow, caused by a crash of the #63 car in the LMP2 field. However, they didn't complete a 'full pit stop' and rather only refuelled a couple of litres, limiting the probably advantage of an early stop. The #94 Peugeot inherited the lead with the Toyota rejoining in third.
picture

‘Trouble! Big Trouble!’ - #63 Prema Racing crashes out of 24 Hours of Le Mans

The #50 Ferrari too headed for the pits under yellow to change the brakes, sacrificing quite a bit of time. In fact, they lost significant time due to further work required on the hybrid system's cooling. They are back out on track but, on a several-lap deficit, likely out of the running for the win.
Pit stops followed for the leading duo of the #94 Peugeot and the #2 Cadillac. Nico Muller just managed to maintain the lead, narrowly ahead of Sebastien Buemi in the #8 Toyota who swiftly claimed the position.
A couple more pit stops followed before disaster struck for Peugeot. Running in P3, Gustavo Menezes lost control and found the barriers in the #94 car. He nursed the damaged car back to the box.
picture

‘That is quite a big hit!’ - #94 Peugeot TotalEnergies involved in big crash

Sebastien Buemi (#8 Toyota) and James Calado (#51 Ferrari) battled it out at the front. However, Ferrari eventually took the advantage in the pits when they only refuelled while Toyota made a tyre swap.
Toyota regained the lead on track but couldn't shake off the Ferrari. Meanwhile, Laurens Vanthoor touched the barrier in the #6 Porsche but was able to continue.
Alessandro Pier Guidi closed the gap to the Toyota on track just before both cars headed to the box. Service was done on either side, but Ferrari came out the better, only swapping tyres and drivers while the Toyota needed additional work done on the front.
Elsewhere, Sebastien Bourdais (#3 Cadillac) and Kevin Estre (#6 Porsche) battled it out for P4. Their fight, however, came to a halt when Estre was cut by an LMP2 car and hit the barriers near the Porsche curves. He nursed the car back to the box with damage to the floor.
Both the Ferrari and the Toyota pitted again, swapping to Antonio Giovinazzi and Sebastien Buemi respectively, and to new tyres on either side.

08:10 GOOD MORNING

Good morning and welcome back to the live coverage of the Le Mans 24 Hours. We'll catch you up on what happened during the night and will be with you now until the end of the race.
Antonio Giovinazzi is currently leading in the #51 Ferrari, chased by Sebastien Buemi in the #8 Toyota.

00:30 GOODNIGHT

And that concludes our coverage of the centenary Le Mans 24 Hours for now. You can still watch the twilight hours racing live on Eurosport.
It's been an eventful race so far to say the least and, incredibly, the #8 Toyota that took the lead on the opening lap and went on to meander through the field, is back on top of proceedings after nine and a half hours.
We'll be back from 8am BST to bring you live coverage of the crucial stages of the race.

00:20 TOYOTA TAKE THE LEAD AT THE RESTART

Nico Muller initially manages to hold the lead at the restart, but the Peugeot driver eventually has to surrender to Ryo Hirakawa who puts the #8 Toyoto on P1. Antonio Fuoco follows in third ahead of his Ferrari-colleague Alessandro Pier Guidi. Alex Lynn completes the top 5 in the Cadillac.

00:18 WE ARE BACK RACING

The race proceeds after another lengthy safety car phase.

00:10 RESTART MOMENTS AWAY

Everything is pointing towards an imminent restart. Once the field is organised, we should get back underway - shouldn't be too long now!

Saturday June 10

23:51 TOYOTA IN FUEL-SAVING MODE

Ryo Hirakawa is instructed to engage more engine braking to save fuel, likely a reaction to the prolonged safety car phase.
The #7 Toyota meanwhile is now finally cleared off the track. Merging is about to begin and we're approaching an end to the safety car.

23:27 LEADERS PEUGEOT PIT, MAINTAIN P1

A pit stop for the #94 Peugeot does very little to the order as their already substantial lead allows them to rejoin the track still in P1.
In fact, their immediate pursuers too head to the box a lap later. The exception is the #8 Toyota, piloted by Ryo Hirakawa, that moves up into second as a result.

23:18 SAFETY CAR OUT

The safety car is out to allow for the track to be cleared of debris and barriers to be repaired as required.

23:10 THAT'S IT FOR THE #7 TOYOTA

Kamui Kobayashi has vacated his car and the #7 Toyota crew are acknowledging that they are out of the race for good.
The race is now under full course yellow conditions.

23:02 PEUGEOT LEAD AMIDST DRAMA

It might have fallen off the radar amidst the drama and chaos, but Nico Muller in the #94 Peugeot has inherited the race lead. Nicklas Nielsen is third in the #50 Ferrari followed by Earl Bamber's Cadillac.

23:00 #7 TOYOTA ALSO HIT BY INCIDENT

And that's the #7 Toyota of Kamui Kobayashi now stationary on the track. A slow zone was called going into Tertre Rouge which, apparently, wasn't acknowledged by all drivers, resulting in a multi-car incident with the Toyota coming out of it poorly.

22:57 FERRARI SPINS OUT OF THE LEAD

Disaster for Alessandro Pier Guidi and the #51 Ferrari as they spin out of the lead in the Mulsanne chicane and are stranded in the gravel. The car is returned to the track with some assistance and Pier Guidi can resume the race, but the lead is very much gone.

22:38 VANWALL ISSUES COST FERRARI

As the #4 Vanwall, one of only three non-hydro-powered hypercars, stops between the Dunlop curves and Tertre Rouge with a technical issue, a slow zone is called to recover the car. With the leading #51 Ferrari of Alessandro Pier Guidi having to comply with the slow zone but the track having been cleared by the time its pursuers reached that section, the Ferrari lost a good chunk of time. The gap at the front is no longer more than a minute but still a healthy 47 seconds.

22:25 #75 PORSCHE OUT OF ACTION

The #75 Porsche of Mathieu Jaminet, Nick Tandy, and Felipe Nasr, last seen at slow speed off-track, is now officially retired from the race due to technical problems.

22:20 LMP2 AND LMGTE AM STANDINGS UPDATE

As things calm down a bit in the hypercars class, here is an update on the standings elsewhere:
LMP2
  • 1 Inter Europol Competition #34
  • 2 Team WRT #41
  • 3 Alpine Elf Team #35
  • 4 AF Corse #80
  • 5 Algarve Pro Racing #45
LMGTE AM
  • 1 Project 1 - AO #56
  • 2 Iron Dames #85
  • 3 AF Corse #54
  • 4 Kessel Racing #57
  • 5 Proton Competition #911

22:17 BLOMQVIST CALLED TO MEDICAL CENTRE

Bit of a curious one as Tom Blomqvist, racing in the LMP2 class, is called back to the box and onto the medical centre by race direction mid-stint. The reason is rather unclear at the moment, but it has certainly caused some hectic in the United Autosports garage.

22:07 BOTH FERRARIS NOW ON SLICKS, MAINTAIN LEAD

Alessandro Pier Guidi now also pits for slick tyres and, courtesy of their massive advantage, rejoins the track still in the lead.
Kamui Kobayashi too brings his Toyota to the box and comes back out in third, behind the #94 Peugeot, now piloted by Nico Muller, but ahead of Nicklas Nielsen's Ferrari.

21:57 PIT STOPS AND TYRE CHANGES BEGIN

The #50 Ferrari of Nicklas Nielsen is first to pit and change back to slicks. Ferrari will monitor Nielsen's times closely now to make the right strategy call for their leading #51 car.

21:54 SLOW MOVEMENT FROM THE #75

Mathieu Jaminet is inching his Porsche along the side of the track at very slow speed, running on electric battery power alone after a restart.

21:51 CONDITIONS IMPROVE

The rain is now significantly lighter and has stopped altogether in some areas. However, the track is still wet in sections.

21:47 NIGHTMARE CONTINUES FOR PORSCHE

Porsche continue to go through all circles of hell in Le Mans as the #75 car, currently piloted by Mathieu Jaminet, stops side-track near Tetre Rouge with no indication to start again any time soon. Some speculation here, but this very much looks like a technical failure.

21:43 FERRARI ON THE CHARGE

While Alessandro Pier Guidi managing a one-minute advantage for the #51 Ferrari at the front, Nicklas Nielsen has made up some ground in the #50 Ferrari and is running in fourth.
Meanwhile Kamui Kobayashi's charge has come to a halt as the Japanese driver can't seem to find any more time on Loic Duval.

21:35 PIER GUIDI ON THE PACE

Alessandro Pier Guidi is putting in some shift for the #51 just now. The Italian has stormed to a massive lead of more than a minute, taking around 20 seconds per lap out of his opponents.
Behind, Kamui Kobayashi in the #7 Toyota is inching closer to Loic Duval who is running the Peugeot in P2.

21:27 WESTBROOK OFF

Richard Westbrook falls victim to the conditions as he comes off track and into the gravel. He manages to avoid the barriers though and rejoins the track in fourth.

21:20 NO SAFETY CAR (YET), WET TYRES ON

The safety car remains in the box for the time being, but all hypercars are now on wet tyres. Alessandro Pier Guidi leads for Ferrari with Loic Duval and Peugeot in second, around half a minute behind. Kamui Kobayashi, who is now steering the #7 Toyota, is third, closely followed by Richard Westbrook in the #2 Cadillac.
Dark and wet, it's extremely challenging out there just now.

21:14 CHAOS AGAIN

It's brutal out there just now! The rain takes its toll with several spins and crashes across the track. Some cars have already swapped to wet tyres, others are speculating for a safety car to pit.

21:06 RAIN AGAIN!

There was talk of more rain and it is here now. There's fairly heavy showers on parts of the track.

21:03 PIT STOPS COMPLETE, FERRARI 1-2

With everyone now having completed their pit stops, Ferrari are back on top, Alessandro Pier Guidi leading Nicklas Nielsen. Loic Duval follows in third.
The #75 Porsche of Nick Tandy, Felipe Nasr, and Mathieu Jaminet sacrificed some additional time in the box to change the steering wheel

20:54 MORE RAIN TO COME?

Word of more rain to come is spreading.

20:51 TOYOTA BACK IN FRONT AFTER SEVERAL PIT STOPS

Antonio Giovinazzi and Alex Lynn head to the box for their seventh and sixth stop respectively. MIguel Molina remains in the lead with Loic Duval's Peugeot now his first chaser, but only one lap later, they both too pit.
Toyota inherit a one-two lead, Brendon Hartley in the #8 ahead of Jose Maria Lopez in the #7, while Nick Tandy is third in the Porsche. All three are due a pit stop though.

20:49 INFO ON THE #5 PORSCHE

Porsche have provided an update on what happened to the #5 Porsche of Dane Cameron, Michael Christensen, and Frederic Makowiecki; they report the car had to be re-started due to a sensor issue and then suffered a slow puncture.

20:34 IT'S GETTING DARK

The headlights are on as it's gradually getting darker in Le Mans and the (track) temperature drops. Sunset is forecast for 21:57 local time (20:54 BST), but the sky is looking very cloudy. The track isn't fully dry yet.
The Ferrari duo currently hold a roughly 16-seconds advantage.

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 5 update following a big fight between Ferrari and Porsche

Back underway following a lengthy safety car period, it was all action in the fifth hour of the race. Here is a summary of what happened:
picture

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 5 update following a big fight between Ferrari and Porsche

20:17 TANDY PITS FROM LEAD

Porsche's lead is short lived as Nick Tandy now heads to the box and the Ferrari one-two is restored, Miguel Molina running ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi. Loic Duval is now fourth in the Peugeot with Alex Lynn's Cadillac in fourth.

20:15 PORSCHE DRAMA CONTINUES

Yet another setback for Porsche as the #5 car of Dane Cameron is inexplicably slow on the Hunaudieres straight. Frederic Makowiecki takes over after a pit stop, but the team has now been lapped.
That leaves the #75 of Nick Tandy, Felipe Nasr, and Mathieu Jaminet Porsche's only car in the running up front. The good news, however, is that the Jota-Porsche crew did an outstanding repair job and the #38 is back out on track with Will Stevens behind the wheel.

20:07 FERRARIS PIT

That's it with the Ferrari lead for the time being as both Miguel Molina and Antonia Giovinazzi head to the pits.
Nick Tandy now leads with the #75 Porsche, initially followed by Brendon Hartley's #8 Toyota, but the Kiwi is next to make his way to the box.

19:53 HIGH SPEED CRASH FOR LEADING PORSCHE

Tough times for Jota-Porsche as Yifei Ye misses his braking point at the Porsche curves, goes through the gravel, and into the barrier. He returns to the track with a heavily damaged car and nurses it back to the box. With debris left on the tarmac, the race goes into full course yellow.
Ferrari inherit a one-two lead.

19:51 PENALTY FOR CAMERON

It's a drive through penalty for the #5 Porsche as Dane Cameron is found guilty of overtaking under safety car conditions. This will cost the team between 20 to 25 seconds.

19:36 TYRE TROUBLE FOR ESTRE

That's likely it for the victory ambitions of the #6 Porsche team as they suffer damage to the right rear tyre at the start of the Hunaudieres straight. Kevin Estre is nursing his vehicle back to the box, but he has a very long way to go.
The #5 Porsche has its own troubles as Dane Cameron goes off track near the esses. Ferrari capitalise with both Miguel Molina and Antonio Giovinazzi flying past. To make matters worse, Cameron is now under investigation for a potential overtake behind the safety car.

19:20 BACK UNDERWAY

The safety car is called back and a number of cars follow it into the pits, including the two Toyotas.
On the track, a feisty battle ensues with some minor contact and off-track excursions. Dane Cameron as well as both Ferraris fly past Alex Lynn and engage in a fight between themselves. Cameron makes the best of the Mulsanne straight to get the better of his opponents and when Antonio Giovinazzi tries to retaliate, he instead loses a position to his Ferrari-colleague Miguel Molina. Meanwhile, Yifei Ye turned up the pressure to take P1 off Gustavo Menzes who keeps dropping down the order on wet tyres and now heads for the pits.

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 4 Update as Peugeot assume lead

It might have been marked by a lengthy safety car period, but the fourth hour of the race still delivered excitement. Here's a recap:
picture

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 4 update Peugeot assume lead

19:00 END OF SAFETY CAR IN SIGHT?

The rain looks to have stopped throughout the track now and the field is being organised behind the safety car. We should be getting back underway again soon.
Almost all hypercars have now changed back onto slick tyres, the exception being Gustavo Menezes', leaving the #94 Peugeot in the lead from Kevin Estre in the #6 Porsche and Jose Maria Lopez in the #7 Toyota. Brendon Hartley follows in the #8 Toyota while Nick Tandy completes the top 5 in the #75 Porsche.

18:55 LMP2 AND LMGTE AM STANDINGS

As the safety car stays out, here are the standings in the LMP2 and LMGTE AM classes:
LMP2
  • 1. Alpine Elf Team #35
  • 2. Alpine Elf Team #36
  • 3. United Autosports #23
  • 4. Duqueine Team #30
  • 5. Team WRT #41
LMGTE Am
  • 1. Iron Dames #85
  • 2. Project 1 - AO #56
  • 3. Proton Competition #911
  • 4. TF Sport #72
  • 5. ORT by TF #25

18:48 GAME OVER FOR #93 PEUGEOT

Jean-Eric Vergne in the #93 Peugeot (not the leading Peugeot) is among the first two drivers to pit and change back on slicks, the other being Dan Cameron in the #5 Porsche. An uncharacteristic error from Vergne on his outlap, however, sees him lose the car and spin into the gravel where it stays stranded and has to be evacuated.

18:31 LEADER BEING INVESTIGATED

Race direction have reported an investigation over the leading Peugeot regarding a possible pit stop infringement.

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 3 update as rain causes chaos

The rain has arrived in Le Mans and caused quite a bit of chaos. Here is a recap of the third hour of the race:

Weekend of Champions

As the safety car is still out in Le Mans, don't forget there's more top-class sports action on this weekend.
Dubbed the Weekend of Champions, owing to the sheer amount of world-class action across multiple sports, over 300 Warner Bros. Discovery staff, including production staff, experts and reporters will be on-site across a host of locations over the weekend – from the UEFA Champions League final to Roland-Garros and Le Mans and more. Delivering over 70 hours of live, premium content to millions of sports fans across the continent across multiple platforms.
Speedway GP coverage is now live on Eurosport while the UEFA Champions League final is underway on BT Sport.

'I thought they were crazy!' - Button hails 'phenomenal' NASCAR at Le Mans

Away from the hypercars class, Hendrick Motorsports made headlines by bringing a stock car to Le Mans, piloted by Jenson Button, Jimmie Johnson, and Mike Rockenfeller. They are currently running in 44th overall.

18:10 FERRARI AND TOYOTA ALSO PIT

Ferrari and Toyota now surrender to the weather and pit for rain tyres - all hypercars are now running on that compound.
That leaves Gustavo Menezes and Peugeot in the lead ahead of the Jota-Porsche of Yifei Ye. The Ferraris follow in third and fourth from Alex Lynn's Cadillac in fifth.

18:05 CHAOS AND PIT STOPS

Multiple teams opt for a pit stop and swap to wet tyres. Interestingly, most manufacturers are splitting their strategy with one of their cars pitting and the other staying out, the exception being the two Ferraris, now holding a one-two lead, and the two Toyotas who stake everything on one card.

17:54 SAFETY CAR OUT AS RAIN ARRIVES

The rain does indeed find the track, or at least parts of it - while the track is getting increasingly wetter from Indianapolis through to start/finish, the Hunnaudieres straight is still dry. One to profit though is Gustavo Menezes in the Peugeot who excells in the mixed conditions. He makes several overtakes and goes into second.
However, the varying conditions across the circuit make driving more than difficult. After a number of spins, including Scott Dixon's Cadillac and the #709 Glickenhaus alongside several LMP2 and GTE cars, the safety car eventually comes out.

17:42 TOYOTA LOSE HALF A MINUTE

Really poor luck for Sebastien Buemi and Toyota who complete a slow zone just before it is deactivated. In consequence, the Peogeot of Jean-Eric Vergne and the Porsche of Alex Lynn win half a minute on them.
Things aren't going Laurens Vanthoor's way either who is forced to the pits by a slow puncture.

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 2 update with plenty of crashes

No rest for the wicked in Le Mans! Here is what happened in the second hour of the race:
picture

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 2 update with plenty of crashes

17:36 RAIN IN SEVEN MINUTES?

Race direction report that, according to their weather forecast, they are expecting rain to hit the track about seven minutes from now.

17:35 FIGHT FOR P2 HEATS UP

Antonio Felix Da Costa is fighting hard to keep Laurens Vanthoor behind him, but the one to profit is Antonio Fuoco in the Ferrari who passed the factory Porsche for third. Eventually, both Da Costa and Fuoco as well as the second Porsche of James Calado opt for the pit lane. While Fuoco stays behind the wheel, Antonio Giovinazzi takes over in the Ferrari and Ye Yifei now steers the Jota-Porsche.
Out front, Sebastien Buemi has a very healthy lead.

17:25 BUEMI BACK IN FRONT, QUESTION MARK BEHIND PORSCHE'S STRATEGY

With all pits stops done, the Toyota of Sebastien Buemi is back in the lead 10 seconds from Antonio Felix Da Costa's Jota-Porsche and Laurens Vanthoor's Porsche.
Porsche will have suffered from not capitalising on the slow zones and hence being forced to pit under race pace. However, they now have some laps in hand over their competitors which could come in handy later on. Right now it's difficult to tell how things will work out for the German manufacturer.

'Massive crash' - #14 Nielsen Racing smashes into barrier

The slow zones heavily impacted the race at this stage. Here is the crash that caused the reshuffling of the field:
picture

'Massive crash' - #14 Nielsen Racing smashes into barrier

17:16 SLOW ZONES DEACTIVATED

The full track is back to green which works to the demise of the three leaders. Earl Bamber had just pitted and lost significant ground to his opponents who are now racing at full speed again. He rejoins almost 40 seconds behind the Toyota of Sebastien Buemi. The two Porsches are still leading but are due a similar fate, still due a pit stop each.

17:05 DIFFERENT PIT STRATEGIES

Leading the race are three cars yet due a pit stop in the Cadillac of Earl Bamber, the Porsche of Michael Christensen, and the Porsche of Felipe Nasr.
Following in fourth and set to inherit the lead is the Toyota of Sebastien Buemi. Antonio Felix Da Costa and the Jota-Porsche team are capitalising on an early pit stop and worked their way up to fifth ahead of Laurens Vanthoor in sixth. Mike Conway is another two seconds behind in the Toyota.

16:54 NIGHTMARE FOR BOURDAIS

There's contact between the Cadillac of Sebastien Bourdais and the LMGTE Ferrari of Simon Mann, incredibly, in the slow zone. Bourdais suffers damage to his car and is forced to pit for repairs. Scott Dixon takes over at the steering wheel and rejoins in 14th.

16:48 STANDINGS POST PIT STOPS

With a number of pit stops in the books, this is the current top 5:
  • 1 Earl Bamber (Cadillac Racing)
  • 2 Michael Christensen (Porsche Penske Motorsport)
  • 3 Felipe Nasr (Porsche Penske Motorsport)
  • 4 Sebastien Buemi (Toyota Gazoo Racing)
  • 5 Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche Penske Motorsport)

24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 1 update as Toyota lead Ferrari

It's been all action in Le Mans so far. Here is a recap of what happened within the first hour of racing:
picture

Le Mans - Hour 1 update as Toyota lead Ferrari

16:38 ANOTHER LMP2 CRASH, MORE PIT STOPS

Ricky Taylor crashes on the straight, likely caused by contact with another car. With three slow zones now, even more teams opt for a pit stop and the field is being reshuffled.

16:28 BIG CRASH FOR SALES

Slow zone is activated in Zone 1 due to a big crash from Rodrigo Sales (Nielsen Racing, LMP2). No safety car at the moment, but a number of cars opt for a pit stop.

16:24 FIGHT FOR P4

It's getting feisty in the fight for P4. James Calado gets the better of Earl Bamber while the Porsches of Laurens Vanthoor and Felipe Nasr are occupied with each other and with Mike Conway.

16:18 TOYOTA STRATEGY

Both Toyotas started the race on soft tyres and are now on mediums. Hardly any other team has so far opted for a tyre change.

16:16 MASS PIT STOPS AT THE FRONT

That's all cars in the top group now heading for the pits. Sebastien Buemi rejoins in third ahead of James Calado. Felipe Nasr is sixth from Laurens Vanthoor, Mike Conway, and Michael Christensen. Earl Bamber in the Cadillac is reaping the rewards of a well-controlled first stint and is now racing with this group
Ferrari meanwhile look to have planned this nicely with Nicklas Nielsen who capitalised on racing in some clearer air following his early pit stop and now leads the race. Sebastien Bourdais is second in the Cadillac, having pitted even earlier than Nielsen.

16:10 CONWAY IN THE BOX

Mike Conway looked in some bother and is indeed called to the box, likely for a tyre change from soft to medium.
Out on the track, traffic is now becoming an issue as cars of different classes start lapping each other.

16:04 NASR ON THE MOVE

Felipe Nasr is putting further proof to Porsche's pace as he takes third from Mike Conway in the Toyota who can just about hold Laurens Vanthoor behind him.
Out front, Sebastien Buemi is showing none of the issues he indicated during the safety car phase. Toyota report that the problems were indeed directly linked to the safety car settings and should not impact the car in race mode.

Weekend of Champions

Don't forget that Le Mans 24h isn't the only major sports event this weekend.
Speedway GP coverage is coming up live on Eurosport from 17:55 BST while the UEFA Champions League Final is live on BT Sport from 18:00 BST.

15:55 NIELSEN FIRST TO PIT

Nicklas Nielsen is the first of the top group to pit. Having lost positions to both the Toyota and the other Ferrari, the crew opted for a possibly slightly early spot. No driver change and no tyre change, it's re-fuelling only for Nielsen and he rejoins the track in 13th.
Meanwhile, the Porsche Penske Motorsport cars have found some seriously good rhythm are now running in positions four, five, and six.

15:53 FERRARIS FIGHT EACH OTHER, FIGHT CONWAY

James Calado attacks his manufacturer-colleague Nicklas Nielsen and eventually gets the better not only of him but also of Mike Conway's Toyota to take second. However, their fighting costs time and allows the field to close in on them.
Sebastien Buemi continues to lead with an increasingly healthy gap.

15:42 BUEMI HOLDS LEAD AT RE-START

Sebastien Buemi nails the re-start and not only holds the lead, he even creates some space to the Ferrari in second. Mike Conway in the second Toyota is putting the pressure on Nicklas Nielsen and indeed overtakes to make it a one-two for the Japanese manufacturer.

Aitken crashes inside five minutes

Jack Aitken and the Action Express Racing team found themselves in some bother early on as Aitken hit the barrier on the opening lap. Here is what happened:
picture

15:33 END OF SAFETY CAR IN SIGHT, PROBLEMS FOR TOYOTA?

The Toyota box let Sebastien Buemi know that the Lap 1 contact with Felipe Nasr doesn't seem to have caused any damage. However, Buemin in turn reports that the car is not properly recuperating and that he has to break very hard.
The safety car is still out while the barriers are being fixed. However, with the cars increasingly being bunched up behind the safety car, a re-start looks on the horizon.

15:26 FERRARI MIRRORS TOYOTA STRATEGY

Info from the Ferrari box to James Calado is to pit if one or both of the Toyotas does so.

LeBron waves French tricolour to start race, chaos descends during opening lap

The field continues to follow the safety car, headed by Sebastien Buemi. Here's how we got there:

15:23 BUEMI LEADS UNDER SAFETY CAR

While the safety car is still out, here is a reminder of how Sebastien Buemi took the lead for Toyota:

15:18 AITKEN EXPECTED TO REJOIN THE RACE

Work is going on in the Action Express Racing garage to get the Cadillac back running. The team are expecting to be able to send Jack Aitken back out on track in about 10 minutes time.

15:04 BUEMI ON THE CHARGE, SAFETY CAR OUT

Sebastien Buemi is looking great in the Toyota and moves up into second. He attacks Nicklas Nielson for the lead and after same fight-back from the Dane, he eventually takes it. The second Toyota, currently driven by Mike Conway, is up to third, taking the position from James Calado in the Ferrari.
That's it for overtaking action for the time being though as the safety car is out following Mark Kvamme's crash as the car is recovered and the track cleaned up. The barrier also needs repaired where it was hit by Jack Aitken.

15:00 GO TIME IN LE MANS

The race is officially underway. The two Ferraris maintained the first two spots, Nicklas Nielsen leading the pack. A lock-up for Felipe Nasr (Porsche Penske Motorsport) results in some contact with Sebastien Buemi, but the Toyota driver recovers swiftly and goes on the hunt for the Ferraris.
Elsewhere, it's an off-track excursion for Jack Aitken (Action Express Racing) who hits the barriers but can continue driving and makes his way to the box. A crash for Mark Kvamme in the LMP2 Inter Europol Oreca, however, has the car stranded in the gravel.

14:55 FORMATION LAP

The cars are out on track for the formation lap. It seems everyone has opted for slick tyres.

Global sport superstar LeBron James is on the grid, getting ready to start the race.

14:51 TRACK DECLARED WET

Race control has officially declared the track wet and all cars will need to have their rain lights on.
There were some showers between warm-up and race start; however, there's huge differences across the circuit with some parts wet, others damp, and others dry. It's important to remember there are no intermediate tyres and compound decisions could be crucial here.

14:40 CEREMONIES UNDERWAY

The trophy arrives on the grid, delivered by Mister Le Mans, Tom Kristensen, in an historic replica.
Meanwhile, the French Tricolour is delivered by the French military to LeBron James who officially waves the event off.

14:35 LA MARSEILLAISE IS ON

Special moments on the grid as la Marseillaise rings out and is sung along loudly.

14:30 BUEMI: 'THIS WEEKEND IS EVEN MORE SPECIAL'

Sebastien Buemi is going for a fifth consecutive Le Mans 24h victory this year at the centenary edition of the race:
'It feels strange because it is difficult to understand how big this race is - it's usually big, but this weekend it's even more special. We want to do well. We've worked as hard as we could, but the competition is there. I try to just think about my own business, make sure I improve my driving and get up to speed, and be ready to fight hard.
'It's so hard to win and you need some luck as well. [Rather than focus on a fifth win] I'm more feeling like, let's focus on the job, let's make sure I focus on how to drive well and help my teammates. Let's make sure to extract the most out of the car and then the rest may follow.'

14:10 LESS THAN AN HOUR TO GO

With just under an hour to go until the race gets underway, here's a reminder of how qualifying went on Thursday:
Ferrari beat Toyota to the Hyperpole as Antonio Fuoco set the benchmark on 3'25.213. Alessandro Pier Guidi even made it a one-two for the Italian manufacturer on their return to the Le Mans top class. The two Toyotas, navigated by Jose Maria Lopez and Brendon Hartley respectively, followed while the Porsche of Frederic Makowiecki completed the top 5.

Johnson ready to rumble

While many eyes will be drawn to the battle between Ferrari, Toyoto and Porsche, NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson will be looking to impress on his Le Mans 24 debut.
Johnson will be behind the wheel of a Chevrolet, and is looking to impress.
He said: “There is a lot of pressure because we have to showcase the professionalism of a NASCAR team.
“Our project is about fun, but also about performance. We added weight to the car as well as adjusted the aerodynamics and brakes. The car is performing very well, it is consistent and even beyond our expectations, so everything is going well."
