World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Ogier took the early Rally Portugal lead after Thursday's opening superspecial.
The Lausada Rallycross circuit was the venue for the stage, with the mixed surface track opening the event.
Ogier finished 0.9s clear of Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville, who had been fastest in the morning shakedown.
Fellow Hyundai driver Dani Sordo was third, finishing ahead of the two Volkswagens of Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari Matti-Latvala.
Citroen's Kris Meeke was sixth on his first WRC outing since Monte Carlo in January.
Rally Argentina winner Hayden Paddon was seventh after going head to head with Ogier on the stage.
