Azcona challenges Muller for WTCR runner-up spot five years after watching him on TV
Mikel Azcona has revealed how he’s gone from watching four-time FIA World Touring Car champion Yvan Muller on TV to challenging him for track position in WTCR / OSCARO.
Azcona, 22, claimed his second podium finish in the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO when he netted third in Race 1 at WTCR Race of Netherlands earlier.
Before completing the Zandvoort podium in his PWR Racing CUPRA TCR, Azcona had been a race-long threat to Muller in the battle for second place behind winner Thed Björk.
“It’s strange because five years ago when I was go-karting I was looking on TV at WTCC races and in those moments I wanted to be there,” said Azcona, the winner of the 2018 TCR Europe title. “Now I am here driving with these good drivers that when I was young I was watching on TV. It’s a strange feeling, but now I am very comfortable to be here and to learn a lot because they have a lot of experience and hopefully in the future I can be a world champion.”
