Azcona’s multiple WTCR overtakes exceed expectations
Zandvoort winner Mikel Azcona admitted that even he was surprised at the high number of passing moves he completed at WTCR Race of Slovakia on Sunday.
The PWR Racing driver made up a total of 19 places when comparing his respective starting and finishing positions on the 5.922-kilometre Slovakia Ring.
In Race 1 the Spaniard rose from P14 to P9. He then produced another strong charge in his CUPRA TCR to take seventh place in Race 2 having started P13 on the grid. But he saved his best to last as he fought through from P13 to fifth in the third and final counter of the weekend.
“To climb 19 places in three races was a lot more than I could have hoped for,” said Azcona, 22. “Huge thanks to the team for giving me a great race car, our pace was really strong.”
Azcona graduated to the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO as the 2018 TCR Europe champion with his triumph at Zandvoort last May his sole victory of his title-winning campaign.
